Why do people do it?

Just down my road, near where I have a hide set up, there were some men there.
4 men and a KID.

They lured what I assume was a badger (my mum was there, I wasn't) from its burrow. They then plugged it, stopping it from going to ground.

Then guess what. No, they didn't use a gun. They used clubs. They beat this poor animal to death for no reason at all.

They don't even own the land or live near it! Why! For kicks? Scum. :(

We've told the farmer and hopefully he'll stop it but what is that about! :help:
 
Will - is it also worth reporting it to the wildlife protection officer with your local police force? They probably won't catch the offenders but it may help them get a more informed picture.

Probably the same low-life scum who put bricks through windscreens for no reason. I despair of people at times... :(

Let's hope someone somewhere catches up with them, and if not then perhaps Karma will do the job for us instead :)
 
I utterly despair when I read about something like this.
 
words fail me!

Hanging would be too good for them imo. What makes this even worse (as if it wasn't bad enough) is bringing the kid along, so another generation are brought up believing its acceptable behaviour.

simply disgusting!
 
I did type out a long reply,describing the horrors that people inflict on wildlife,but thought better of it.

Make sure the WLO is informed and hope that he/she is better than ours.
 
Some people (and they tend to be male) just have such tiny willies that they feel they have to prove themselves by doing unspeakable things to defenceless animals. We can but live in hope that next time they do it, the badger manages to get free and bites their nadgers.

Report it and hope that it's an isolated incident and that the illegitimates get caught before they do it again.

It makes you wonder, what went badly wrong in the evolution cycle, when humans were supposed to be a more advanced form of animal than their predecessors. Unfortunately we are now surrounded by increasing numbers of a new breed of animal, better known to most of us as scum!
 
If your mum is nervous about getting involved she can always report it anomalously that way at least it's known there is a problem in the area.

As for the scum who did it they should get the same back to them, i have no time for idiots like that.

By the initial description,it is not badger baiting as such.More badger killing,either way,badgers are protected animals and it is a criminal offence to do either act.

Depends how seriously your local Plod take Animal Welfare. There will be (or would have been) footprints, possibly tyre tracks, fag ends (DNA) etc at the scene, all of which could be used to tie any suspects to the scene. Of course, it may well be too late for the above to be collected now. Crimes like this MUST be reported ASAP or the midless cowardly *******s will keep getting away with it.
 
I am saddened to hear of the treatment of the badger, it bears no credit to humankind.

Sadly I am also despairing of some of your suggestions for the punishment of these cruel specimens as it indicates they would receive the same/similar treatment at the hands of responsible people.

Some farmers believe that Badgers spread tuberculosis to cows and will take steps to cull them, it's sick to batter them with clubs, Seals and Canadian brutallity spring to mind, why can't they use a gun if they must kill them, i wish all natural species were left alone by man in an ideal world.
 
It is indeed illegal and the Police and RCPCA should be informed...they'll take it from there.
The farmer may not be a willing accomplice, but as stated, some believe that badgers spread diseases amongst cattle so will turn a blind eye to such practices or even pay third-parties to carry it out on the QT...

Whether or not the local constabulary takes it seriously is moot - it's illegal and they're duty-bound to investigate - once reported, you've started a paper-chain that must be followed-up - targets and all that - an unresolved or ignored complaint shows up in the balance-sheet...

Col, Unfortunately scum like this have been treated with kid gloves for too long in this country and Joe Public is sick of it, hence the severe response from our law abiding citizens. There has to be a deterrent/punishment or things like this will continue to be an every day occurence (maybe as someone suggested shoving a shotgun up their ...., was a bit too strong for this crime, but I would support it for some of the more serious crimes).

The landowner is responsible,partly, for what goes on on his land.

I entirely agree but there are even more base practices carried out by such minorities to their own kind which should incur more serious retribution.

Justice should be appropriate to the crime and objectivity in each case must be exercised.
 
If you dont want to report to the police, then contact your local badger group - they will almost certainly have links with the local police wildlife officer.
Im sure that you will be able to report this anonymously.

Regardless of whether badgers are suspected of carrying / passing TB, an animal does not deserve to be killed in such horrendous circumstances.

What next for the culprits,to satisfy their blood lust - Young Children ?????
 
if it was the farmer i worked for he'd be paying them... badgers are an absolute menace, but farmers aren't allowed to touch them, hence the nickname 'black+white foxes'

:thinking:........If a landowner employs a gamekeeper,for example, and that gamekeeper ,say,kills owls.Then the landowner is partly responsible for the actions of his employee.

that is the law as far as i`m aware,though the intricacies and get out clauses are vast and varied.
 
Not sure what the farmer can do about it, but he can't bring the perpetrators to justice. No, that needs to be done by the police and the RSPCA. If the farmer co-operates and helps out then there is a greater chance of the investigation carrying on.

Is the carcass still there (ie is there proof it happened) and the set still blocked?

It's important that action is taken on every cruelty act discovered int he area. Often it is the same people who do it (For varied reasons, often financial) so while you may never catch them you can at least make it hard for them to carry on.

I'm sorry, but wtf have their familes got to do with it?
I despise people who commit animal cruelty but attitudes like this really don't help the cause.
 
they must be local to the area if they knew where the sett was.
did your mother not get any vehicle reg number.
