Why is it that on some forums (and I'm referring to fora in general, not necessarily this one) people often lose control, get angry, say things that they wouldn't dream of saying to someone's face?

Is it the case, that sitting behind your monitor you feel connected, but at the same time distanced from those with whom you interact?

Is forum bad behaviour a reflection of the way society is going in general. Can we extrapolate from the behaviour on some forums, and say it's all going down the pan?

Your (polite) comments are most welcome...

Chill...

its cos the internet is a great barrier breaker and depersonalises the other person. Also I suspect why internet porn is amazingly depraved (but lets not go into that).

good point clone of Diego

Lack of eye contact and most people not using their real names - on the internet you can effectively adopt a different personality.

I personally get "angry" when folks don't search so you get one person to lazy to Google or serach and 10 people running around trying to answer something the OP could have sorted themselves without help. In real life I'd call 'em lazy sods too :)

I make it a rule in my life that I don't say anything about anybody, good or bad, which I'm not prepared to say to their face. It has got me into bother several times in my life and will do so again no doubt.

It's all too easy for folk to be big and brave behind the anonymity of the internet. Cowardly mugs, Ive no time for them:razz:

The anonymity of the internet unfortunately can be an ugly thing. Same goes for over the telephone as well, just had a man call me a c**t. Would he seriously call me that if I was standing in front of him?:nono:

Unfortunately anyone who would do that is probably just as bad in real life...!

I think New Diego has a point...we're far more belligerent online that I suspect many of us would be face to face - I guess the liklihood of having a fist in the face is somewhat reduced this way...

There, you see! That is what I call 'the break' The moment that a thread comment 'breaks' the flow - you said 'clone of Diego' and didn't put a smilie. You could have mistyped it and said 'Clown of Diego'. I'm sitting here thinking 'He thinks I'm a rip-off merchant' You don't of course (or do you?).

See what I mean?

Same as people in cars shouting a swearing at someone if they were stood face to face they wouldnt say anything or would be far more diplomatic its that feeling of being untouchable that makes them very brave

.

I've got an app for that ;)

Nothing wrong with clouds at all . . . but if we're back onto clowns, round them up, line them up and shoot the lot of them.
creepy, evil, child-scaring ********s ;)

 Maybe it's just me, but I actually tend to be nicer on the internet than in real life.
Mainly because I can't see people's reactions to know if I'm going too far or upsetting them.
Besides, I come on here to relax and have fun - really CBA'd arguing. Have enough of that in the day job.

I treat people all the same
be that "cyber" be that real life
I just hate everyone, then I cannot be accused of playing favourites ;) :D

It's wierd. I always wonder how people percieve me on forums as opposed to the outside world. And vice versa, I always wonder do some people realise how much of a plank they look and sound like on a forum when they get aggressive or act a little rude. Like for example, you see a post about x/y/z and first reply is *YAWN* or *POPCORN*. I can only imagine being in a pub and someone says "What's the deal with the cost of wedding photographers" and 3 people around the table take out a bag of popcorn and start eating it, 2 start yawning excessively, while the remaining few stand up and start having a full blown row with each other about why you should use a canon instead of a nikon. All I know is I feel sorry for the poor loner in the corner with the sony. Oh why won't somebody just talk to him! He looks like a nice guy! but we all know.. he's really the evil one who planted all the controversy... the *******....

Cowardice, feelings of inadequacy, probably bullied, lacking in confidence and problems handling a relationship

Just go in Smiths and see the strange looking dudes looking at magazines like "Guns and Ammo"
Think these people play the computer games where they are hitmen or nicking cars, few drinks and then its internet warrior time

Would love to see what they are like in the real world, had one go off at me on another forum. Offered to meet up and discuss the issues, but just carried on being abusive then never posted again

Very strange and bit worrying they feel so angry and unhappy that they want to rage at strangers.

I have that same rule - and yes I can be nasty sometimes, but I try not to be...

   You're safe.
The sigs there, so you don't look silly (or no sillier than usual anyway ;) )

Makes me wonder how they coped before the internet :cuckoo:

You dont need to go that far down the aisle, just look at the ones at the photo mag section

No Sarah, it's mostly because you are Welsh! All Welsh people are nice...

There's another 'break'. Someone will make a Robinson-esque comment now about the Welsh. Mods wade in and close it down faster than a council food inspector in a dodgy restaurant.

Waiting.....

What's more worrying is that not only does this change in personality happen over often pointless or meaningless threads and debates over all sorts, but then people post even more pointless and meaningless threads to debate this behaviour.

Maybe i'm a bit odd, but I thought this was a photography forum where people take and post photographs...and then (revolutionary thought I know) people might actually view them and post some comments for a change...

its been my experience that EHO's are pretty slow
at closing down places ;)
And I don't think any of the Adminnies are of Welsh decent
So any anti-Welsh propaganda should run for awhile at least :D

Wouldn't that be rather boring though, can't imagine a site without any diversity lasting too long
Can't think of any specialist site where the conversation doesn't wander a bit, personally like a little off topic chat.

overheard two elderly ladies outside my church in Talybont-on-Usk

"Why look you, there's oor Gwen getting married"
"And not even pregnant!"
"Well, there's posh for you!"

Well said, my man. And I forgive you for what you said about my mother. And as they say ' the world is big enough for all'.

peace and love man.

Actually you are not too far from the truth. The practice of testing each other out... how can I put this politely... Oh sod it .... sexually, is a Welsh practice from at least the 19th century. The intending-to-wed couple would spend the night in the hay barn with the full consent of the parents. Despite being a post-grad in Welsh Hist. I can't remember the name of it now (shame) but I'm sure Cardiff Sarah will tell us.

If that's not a thread tangent I don't know what is.

peace and love man.

Sorry, can't be arsed to read the whole thread ... but

Is that a welsh thing? What's wrong with sheep anyway? .. I thought all you Welsh were the same ..... :D

is there any truth to ....?

the word "honeymoon" comes from a Welsh habit of the bride drinking mead [ a wine from honey] for one lunar month after the wedding to increase her fertility......hence honey-moon

isn't it wonderful what you learn on a tog forum...

What are you implying about people from Cardiff?

I don't know the proper name for it, but there are plenty of others I could suggest . . . not sure the swear filter would let me though :naughty:

That was also a practice in Victorian England
a prospective couple would sleep with a "bolster" (sp?)aka large pillow
between them
I have no idea what it was called
apart from "restrictive" I guess? :D

That they are all charming and intelligent like you.

It's called 'Love on the bed'. I thought it had another name too. ok i think your all right about the face that the internet give you!! i would like to think that people are on the level, but its difficult when your typing to get the correct expression and this can cause confusion and sometimes the wrong attitude is read out in form of text, i think what im trying to say i would hope that if we were all in one room there would be a lot less misunderstandings ??
just my thoughts :shrug::shrug:

No, I wouldn't do that if I were you. But then I'm not because I'm Welsh

Please don't feel ashamed about being Welsh! It's all your parents fault, and they obviously didn't know any better  Anyway I'm from Yorkshire and everyone knows we can't read .... Also the sheep are far prettier in Yorkshire :D
