Angry driver let off after attacking cyclist

The question, Martin, might be to ask why literally dozens of pedal cyclists have died in London in the past couple of years under the wheels of heavy goods vehicles, while to the best of my knowledge not one single motorcyclist has suffered. Someone else might want to research the precise numbers.

I don't think it is that the motorcyclists can accelerate away; I suspect it is that they didn't get themselves into the most dangerous positions to start with and incidentally, I have great respect for the skills of most truck drivers whom I observe manoeuvring carefully and capably around other traffic.

probably that motorcycles make more of a potential mess of the vehicle so get a wider berth.

/sceptic

edit - also a cyclist is a smaller "thing" to spot/ignore. going back to that BBC (was it BBC?) program that talked about the cement mixer that turned left shortly after overtaking a cyclist resulting in their death..

Few motorcycles get overtaken by HGVs...

I've referred to the behaviour of many when they get out in the sticks - I've seen so many potentially lethal situations caused by cyclists' arrogance and inattention, I'm not that surprised there's a heavy toll - as motorists, we bend over backwards to keep them safe, and can't for the life of me understand why the appalling "attitude problem" of so many of them - is it because they feel safe in their helmets, is there some leechate from lycra making them foolhardy?

I'm incredibly careful and wary of any 40-tonners on the road, they could do me one heck of a damage in my relatively safe car - why do so few cyclists display even the most basic self-preservation?

As for motorcyclists - there's a bendy road nearby that is forever sprouting collections of flowers and religious artefacts after yet another biker has failed to make the bends in one piece - I can only wonder "why?" - I drove a bike for a while, there's no reason for the prangs, except bloody bad driving (they're usually "motor bike only" accidents)......

maybe the same reason why you're so peeved with them, because they've had too many negative experiences of motorists?

got any source to back that up? I think most cyclists would prefer not to mix with 40 tonne lumps of metal but unfortunately they're just as bad as some light vehicle users from what ive seen.

also there seems to be a lot of topic twisting from the anti-cyclist lot.. remember this thread started off about a motorist assaulting a cyclist for nothing more than expressing disgust at getting cut up. and somehow we've ended up on "how cyclists are all evil".

I don't disagree - but theres been an equal ammount of " all motorists are evil/ all cyclists are saints" from some cyclists here which is also flawed.

Both user groups are just people, and in both (and every other) there's a wide spectrum from careful and considerate through to absolute arse with one brain cell and an entitlement attitude wider than anne widecombes arse.

I don't get why (some) people can't just accept that and stop generalising about the "other side" as though they are all arse holes

 precisely the point I've been trying (and failing) to make to a couple of posters.

I'm a cyclist and driver so can I call myself names :-)
Unfortunately there are a small number of cyclists who behave like they are a law unto themselves, and can do as they please when on a bike.
Equally there are a small number of drivers who have little patience and think that cyclists shouldn't be on the road and drive like they are not there.
