My partner and I are limiting ourselves to one foreign holiday this year (oh the travails!) and, having enjoyed a two-week camping trip in the north of France last year, we are looking at doing something similar in the UK. Originally I had looked at a trip to Mull and the Highlands but the ubiquity of midges has dissuaded us both from camping in that part of the world. My thinking is now towards Anglesey.

Has anyone here been on a camping trip or otherwise a trip generally to this part of the world? In which case would you recommend certain 'corners' of the island for a camping trip? It will mainly be walks, a bit of swimming and beach-sitting that we look to enjoy as - for part of the holiday - we are looking to go on the back of a two-day walking trip in Snowdonia.

Any tips would be most welcome. Thank you!

base your self on one or the other ,the A55 runs past snowdonia then right through the spine of anglesey a hours journey time at worst ,probably a lot less depending on how you drive .the roads up here are relatively quite (compared to other parts of the country)

If you're looking to walk directly from the camp site along the coastal path then I'd stay on the North/North western side of the island which has the most dramatic/rugged sections of coastal path..

between Rhoscolyn and Holyhead is great, Trearddur bay would be a good place to stay.

The coastal path between Cemaes and Amwlch is great too

Gentler walking is around Newborough and the stunning Llanddwyn beach/Island and Malltreath... walking between Benllech and Amwlch is also nice and pretty easy

You're spoilt for choice really, Anglesey is surprisingly missed by many visitors to the area despite having amazing coastal scenery. Driving from one side of the island to the other only take 45 minutes max too.

as simon has said the north is rugged ,but you do have red wharf bay which is good sand ,treardur bay nr holyhead is good as is rhosneigher . take care of any campsites around R.A.F valley as a jet fighter take off at 5 a.m is not funny . the other option is camping around porthmadog which will let you roam over a much wider area and places to go

Just got back from Anglesey, was there half term week with wife and 6year old we stayed just outside the town of you can call it that called Valley, we visited pretty much everywhere went on many beaches, probably the nicest part and most thriving part is Beumeris has a castle there and and great views of Snowdonia, apart from the usual super markets which are up by Holyhead we struggled to find descent local produce, there is a farm shop not far from Beumeris which has a great cafe in it reccomend this!!
They seem to live on Spar's and cost cutters!
You'll have a great time where ever you stay and it only takes half a day to drive round the island!!

The gwynant campsite is very nice but when we stayed there a few years ago you could not tell where the lake ended and the campsite started and there was very little "high ground" on which to pitch a tent. I got a very strange look when I paid for 4 nights up front. That said I would recommend it, fantastic campsite.

If you are up for going further afield (not knowing where you are based) I would really recommend West Cornwall. Absolutely stunning!
