Angela's 52, Week 26 night

It works for me, such a sad and expressive look. I'd guessed she was hiding under a bench or something like that, and I quite like the sun stripes..

Hello all, sorry about the absence, I had to revise for my exam. I sat for three hours today writing (piffle probably) and have ended up with a sore little finger that now has a plaster on it. :(

Fortunately as I am ambidextrous I can hold my very large glass of wine in my left hand so all is not lost. :naughty:

I hope to catch up with the 52 as soon as possible and give you some feedback on all your hard work.

Welcome back!!

I'm sure you did great in the exam - when do you get the results?

Enjoy that glass (bottle?) of wine - you've earned it!

Looking forward to seeing your catch up shots

I get my results in August, so I am going to put it to the back of my mind until then!!

Ok, although everything had to go on hold until after the exam, I never stopped taking pictures, and so I have some ready to fit the themes (except development) ready for resizing excetera.

Complex

I woke in the morning that we had arranged to go to a butterfly place with a terrible headache. This years exam stress had shown itself in this new and cruel way. I had spent the Saturday laid in bed in the dark hoping it would shfit, but on Sunday morning it was still there.

I made the decision to go though, my reasoning being that there was no way I could revise with the headache so I may as well get some shots in.

I arrived at butterfly house with a pounding head feeling sick, the humidity made me feel worse, and I had to sit down a lot. The ever chivalrus Mr D was off taking his own pics and I was left to my own devices. After about an hour or so my head began to clear (about the same length of time it took for my lens to clear as well) and I began to feel normal (must have been the humidity)

Anyway to cut a long story short I managed to get some really nice shots of butterflies, and this being one of my favourite. With the state I was in I am amazed I got anything.

Complex: the comlpex patterns on its wing.

Hi Angela, It's great to see you back on the 52 treadmill.

Exams are designed to produced the maximum amount of stress - it's not surprising they've given you headaches. The wine is the best antidote. :rules: It doesn't stop the headache but at least you can blame the wine instead of the exams. :D

Your deserved a stunning butterfly shot for going through with the trip when you felt so ill - and you definitely got 'stunning' - the detail is outstanding - imho a shot to be really proud of. What a great way to come back!:clap::clap:

I look forward to seeing your other shots as and when you've got time to post.

Jean

Ooh wow, I really really like that, such a sharp photo!
And well done/good luck with exams and results.

Thanks guys, have been working on Macro for a little while now with flowers mainly, so the butterlies were a new challenge.

Time

My time shot was taken at Flatford Mill. This and Dedham are favourite haunts for my family, as it is only a 20 minute drive from home! It is a place that has stood still in time! When Constable painted here he imortalised the place and because of tourism it has become a Brigadoon!

Week_22_Time.JPG

It was a very dull day, so I am not too happy with the lighting, but not clever enough to do too much to it in photoshop yet!

 ace shot LOVE the buildings, cottages and generally thatched rooves are just so lush to look at. Like the patterns on the left hand side building

Great to see you back and catching up :)

The detail on the butterfly is beautiful and certainly fits the Complex theme. What a great capture :clap::clap:

And the old buildings epitomise time, time passed yet still continuing. Another great representation for the theme :clap::clap:

Time - I agree with Jill - a great representation of the theme. :)

It's nice to see a different view from the Constable-style pictures and there's some lovely, interesting detail. But what makes it for me is the light in the cottage window on the right - it makes it look like a home rather than a chocolate box picture.:thumbs:

Week 23 Inspiration:

Well this for me means only one thing, my two boys. They are the reason I get up in the morning, they spur me on to be a better person and through the trials and tribulations they face they inspire me to do better!!

Ethan is the one on the left he starts college in September, throughout his short life he has had to deal with kidney problems and other health issues as well as being pulled down (mainly by adults) for being bright and wanting to be a marine biologist. (aparently this is precosious) Nothing stops him he just carries on regardless.

Connor is the one on the right, he will be going to upper secondary in September. He suffered horrendus bullying in his first 18 months at secondary school, yet got up everyday and went back and faced the bullies. It wasn't until he was almost stabbed in the neck, that he agreed to allow me to move him. He is now settled, happy and making good progress. A much more laid back version of his brother with a sense of humour rivalled by few.

Both are growing into very nice men! and are my pride and joy!

What a fantastic shot Inspiration is :clap::clap:

And the story that goes with it is both heartbreaking and heartwarming :)

I too was bullied at school but it was always psychological not physical, and as for your elder son being precocious, at leasst he has a goal which is a reason for encouragement not derision in my opinion. You are so lucky to have two fantastic sons, although I suspect that you and your OH have got more do to with it.

Lovely casual and well caught portrait that screams to be framed.:clap::clap:

well done on the catch ups, three lovely shots and on theme ;)

Welcome back...

Well done and good luck with your exam results...

Catch up time:

Complex...that's a fabulous shot...

Time... again a nice shot a bit more contrast and leaving the top of the tree and it would be excellent...

Inspiration... What a lovely capture that is... great focusing to get the background OOF and perfect on the two lads...one word fits...Brilliant, your photography is now on a much higher level...

Week 24 Development

Nearby is a new housing development that is half finished. Not my best creative thought, but it fits the theme. I think it has a nice look with the evening sun on it.

Week 25 Freedom

The theme instantly made me think 'free as a bird' and I had the perfect (or so I thought shot) however, on making it small enough to post on here, it totally looses its sharpness and clarity! So it is one for the wall instead *sigh*

The other shot I have for this theme is a wild rose, growing free at the side of the road against the wall of an old building.

I am sorry to hear you suffered too, I never want to witness someone being slowly demoralised ever again, it was a truely terrible time for all of us! I totally agree with you re number one son, it is sad, but some adults are less than adult sometimes!! I do hope I can claim some credit for them although I think Mr D has that sown up!:naughty:

well done on the catch ups, three lovely shots and on theme ;)
Thanks Corky

Gosh, thank you

I love the picture, Angela and your words add so much more to it. It's Inspiration on so many levels.

No wonder you're proud of your boys. I wish them both every success. :)

Jean
Thanks Jean, I am a very proud mummy, and to think I was told I would never have any children, then I got lucky twice!!

Week 24 Development: I agree - it does have a very nice look to it. It's not just the light imho - it's also the composition. The blue fence leads the eye through the picture and there's plenty to look at but it's not over-busy. One of those deceptively simple shots that you've definitely got an eye for, Angela.:thumbs:

Week 25 Freedom: Fits the bill nicely - and I wouldn't mind having it in my garden, let alone growing wild. :)

Did you crop this at all? I wonder how it would work portrait, it seems a pity to chop off part of the flower at the top. btw - I love the tight little buds above the main flower - they look a bit like ears! :D

I like the idea of a portrait of this though... perhaps if I'm travelling that way again I will have another go. At least it is a lesson learned.

Absolutley cracking shots from you once again, that one of your boys, I really like that - nice n sharp and captures the moment well, too.

Development, I think that picture says a lot for things right now, especially the fact there's those last few that still need doing.

 really well done

How the hell did I miss so many of yours Angela - I do apologise :(

So lets catch up :)

1) Complex - beautful shot of that butterfly - sharp and clear and given the state you were in well taken :)

2) Time - you could have had a time machine for that! Beautiful houses and nicely composed!

3) Inspiration - great and personal shot angela - nice pair of lads who are obviously strong in spirit to have got through what they have! That one is a shot from the heart :)

4) Development - I like this - as Jean mentions that blue fence carries the eye through the shot - spot on the theme and I wonder if work has halted as it has on so many other sites!

5) Freedom - what a lovely rose and wild too! Shame about pruning the one behind but the colours and clarity of the main subject are great! I never considered flowers as free but they are amazingly so !!!

Again sorry to get so far behind but I'll endeavour to keep up from now on!

Great set Angela!

Please don't apologise, the fact is that I have posted all 5 in the last two weeks, as I had to take a break owing to an exam. Thank you for your kind comments, they are appreciated.:D

Week 26 Night

I live near docks, so packed up my camera, tripod and Mr D (won't go out at night without company) and headed down there.

This is my first ever attempt at night photography, and I had sooo much fun getting head and tail lights, although I need a lot of work on quality. This is definitely something I would not have done without the theme, but will do again, so thanks TP!!:D

I presume the camera moved a little on the tripod Angela going by the trails on the lights in the distance, I'm surprised that I don't actually mind that.

Did you use a remote cable or timer delay in camera?

I wish the taxi wasn't there and that the headlights started further into the scene, they seem to start next to the taxi.

Well done for having a go at the trails and for getting to the half way point of your 52.

I can see what you were aiming for - and it's not easy. :)

There's lots of interest in the background but for me the foreground is a bit lacking, although the railings catch the light nicely and give a good lead-in line. Could you have got a better point of view from the wall?

As Hyster says, a cable release is helpful for this type of shot.

This inspires me to get out there and try some different locations around Southampton and Portsmouth, which is what the 52 is all about - so thanks for the idea.

Very nice, I need to get some dock shots sometime :)

Never thought of going down there, great photo.

An interesting shot Angela, that bit of moment has created an interesting effect... almost like everything in the background is falling. I have to agree about the taxi I'm afraid.. Well done for getting out there and shooting it.

A good effort...
some tips for your next attempt at night photography :) if I may...

use a sturdy tripod
set your ISO down to the lowest setting
shoot in manual
set mirror lockup to ENABLED
set long exposure noise reduction to ON
use a remote shutter release cable
for light trails change the curtain mode to front from rear (which is probably the default)

set the aperture as you would normally then adjust the shutter speed checking each shot and adjusting up/down as necessary.

shoot in RAW so you can adjust the W.B. in P.P. as quite often it will look a bit murky when left on AUTO....gives you some extra flexibility in adjusting the exposure too :)

Hope that helps.

Thank you everyone for your comments they are as always much appreciated.

Thanks Kenny your advice is particularly useful, and I have cut and pasted to print out for next time.

I always shoot in raw, but usually on AV or TV. My tripod was my hubbys and it is flimsy and it was a windy evening so I guess that's why I got the effects I did. I did have it on ISO100 I think, but I did not do any of the other things you have suggested, so will go back and have another try. Hubby also wants to go and have a go now too!!:D

Hyster, I do not own a remote, but will try the timer!!

Again guys thanks for the helpful comments. :D :D :D

That is some great advise and I too will be making notes of Jeffs setting, I've not done any night photography before...

I do like the effect you have got in the shot and it's a great effort on your part so well done for getting out there and trying something new...

Oops, sorry Angela, seem to have missed 3 of your shots :(

Development - I like the way the fence draws your eyes through to the unfinished properties and it's one of those pictures where you keep finding more and more details in what appears to be a very simple shot.:clap:

Freedom - lovely detail in this and the buds to either side help to frame it. Shame you cropped the top off the one behind, but I´ve done that lots of times, just looked at the centre of the picture, got home and realised I hadn´t actually thought about the composition. I´d like to say I don´t do that anymore but I don't know how true that would be ;)

Night - What an excellent attempt and the 'wobbles' give it an almost surreal feel. The composition is not up to your usual standard though, but by the looks of it to get a better perspective you would have had to be in the middle of the road

Sounds like we are all going to become night stalkers

Well done :clap::clap:

Love the butterfly shot as well as time and development. Well done you for trying new stuff too with night, it's great fun experimenting with new things isn't it?? I reckon you've got a great location for some night shots there.
