right hear we go first off a little of me ,i have very limited knowledge where photography is concerned i bought a nikon d80 about 12 months ago the old p&s was getting a bit passed it so thought i would treat myself to something a bit better i have no photoshop apart from the basic adjustments that windows photo gallery allows, from there i haven't really explored the camera's full potential when i saw the 2010 52 week challenge i decided i would give it a go and to challenge myself and hopefully improve and gain some knowledge of what the camera is capable of .

So for the first week the theme curved has already got me thinking thinking and scratching my head woundering what i have let myself in for here's what i have to offer this is a minilite alloy wheel off a kit car i am building with it's curved spokes reflecting in the center cap and an attempt to play with it c&c welcome

ok here goes week 2 poem/poetry
this really has had me thinking so inspired by Spike Milligans silly poem

A Silly Poem by Spike Milligan
Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I'll draw a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use?
2B or not 2B?

so here's my week 2

Nice start Andy, feel it could do with a touch more contrast to make it pop a bit more.

I agree, a bit more bite in the contrast and maybe rotate the wheel a little to give it an even division top and botom between the spokes? Good idea to drop the focus point in the reflection, gives some nice depth to the middle of the picture too.

A good start Andy, maybe when you have built the car we can see more of it's curves on a reshoot week :)

Hi Andy,

I'm sure that you'll find the 52 a great learning experience and I like the shot that you've chosen to start with.
The decision to make the reflection in the centre cap the main focal point is really inspired - it adds an interesting dimension to the shot
I agree with the others about adding a bit more contrast, but it's a really good start to your 52. Looking forward to seeing the other weeks.

thanks for the positive comments thought i would post a pic the original picture i thought it was a little over exposed so dropped the contrast a bit i have only the editing tools in windows media gallery so at the minute very little i can adjust

I prefer the original post to the second more contrasty image but feel that there is room for a little more contrast in the first image.

thanks for the comments, week 2 now added c&c welcome

Brilliant, love the glass - makes you stop and think just when you are feeling safe with the image!

Arthur

Love your week one shot and the first is my preferred version! 2nd is a tad harsh for me

The poetry shot (and poem) is just delightful :) The glass needs a tiny straighten but other than that a great interpretation of a simple, funny verse :)

I like your 1st 'curved' best :)

and I love the humour of '2b or not 2b' in your 'poem' - it has good DoF :)

I really like the first Curved shot, possibly a teeny tweak more contrast, but the second is a bit too much. Have a look at GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Package) it's free.

Really like the Poetry shot, good DOF, interesting content, and a good bit of humour.

Hahahah, I really like your week 2.
I didn't look at the pencils properly at first. :-)

very drole - I like it!
made I larf

Love the simplicity of week 2. Nice touch of humour.

week 3 already i think this week we will see a fair amount of similar posts it'll be interesting to see other variations on the theme chopped, this week has been pretty easy as i drove past a local park this afternoon to find that some of the tree's had been chopped down, ok technically cut down but i'm sticking with chopped so off home to grab the camera, by the time i got back to the park light was starting to drop and only had the camera flash for back up, i didn't realise there was a stream that ran through the park until today and thought the addition of a bit of water would make the photo a little more interesting ,i have also discovered adobe photoshop elements on my computer and thought i would use one of there effects this one was old paper so here it is c&c welcome thanks for looking

edit to change the second image a couple more i'm still not totally happy with them myself so may change them before the end of the week

Sorry this image does nothing for me, not enough interest. I would have gone for a close up angle, of the trunk.

I'm afraid the first one doesn't have enough to it... it took me ages to work out what I was looking at. I like the second one, it's got good colours and interesting textures.

Hmm, I think the first shot proves that supplied filters are starting points rather than end results, it needs more kick to give some definition. Of the other three I like the first, but find I keep getting drawn to the pink person on the left - would like to have see it taken from higher up, maybe would have got more detail in the top of the stump that way and so added interest to the foreground.

Hi Andy,
Not the most inspiring theme this week was it?
I think we can see by the number of people who posted more than one shot, that it was difficult to get anything beyond the obvious with a bit of punch to it. And I absolutely take my hat off to all of those who managed to think outside of the box for week 3. (I struggled big time with this one!)

I actually rather like the feel of the first shot, sort of dark and moody – but the subject matter is lacking enough interest and definition to give it any sort of wow factor for me. (and you've missed a bit of green on the RHS with the processing)
Prefer the composition of the second shot, better angle on the log and some nice texture but the background lets it down. I’m not sure that there’s enough mileage in it for a reshoot, shots of tree stumps can only be so interesting, but perhaps somewhere between 1 and 2 might have worked better.

thanks again for the comments all are welcome as my main reason for taking part in this project is to help me improve on my photography i appreciate a critical eye that can show me where my shots need some improvement,i wasn't overly inspired by the theme this week but have a few ideas ready for street just hope i can get them into a shot as i see them in my mind thanks andy

The first is potentially my favourite - you could experiment a bit more with the processing sometime. It is a bit too dark at the moment to make out, but the composition is good, with interesting shapes and textures. If you could lighten it a bit (in the centre at least - a vignette might work) and increase the contrast so that the stumps stand out more recognisably, I think you would be pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately it can take a lot of trial and error (=time) to PP something like this. :)

evening here's this weeks effort week 4 street this is another first for me i thought i would have a go at some light trails down a street ,this is the first shot i took apart from being cropped a little its had no editing and i quite like it,what have i learnt this week it's bl**dy to cold to be standing out side in the dark trying to take a picture,

street%20001.JPG

i also thought i would share a couple of the near miss's
something totally random i set the tripod up in the back of the car and drove down the street this was the outcome :bonk::bonk:

You've got some nice light trails there Andy. Well done for braving the cold and trying something new. I would crop off the left hand side with the street light with this shot though as it's drawing my attention somewhat. Next time try to find somewhere not so heavily lit by street lighting, that way you can keep your surroundings darker and really make those trails stand out.

I agree with, Nattelie about #1. lovely light trails.

I can see why #1 is your favourite, it's mine too :clap::clap:

And I hope you didn't suffer too much from exposure :D

Love the first one, not sure on the others, the hazy ar in shot seems to distract form th trails. Only tried this myself once though and had the same problem so don't know the answer.

Number #2 of your street shots is the one for me. I've seen some cracking examples of this type of shot, and it's something I must try some time.

I really like these Andy.
No.1 is my favourite out of the bunch (although I'm wondering about how you managed to get trails 8' up in the air!!!) but no.2 is a very close second. If the tripod had been just a little more stable to keep the mirror and dashboard sharp that would have been brilliant.

This is something that I really want to get out and try for myself, and seeing these has given me the bit of motivation that I need.

Some nice photos there. Really like the light trails. I think there's a slight yellow cast from the street lights, but nothing that detract from the photos. Poetry is very clever too! Really like the idea behind it

I really like the first one Andy, well done, it's something I thought about trying... As for the cold... you'll get used to it ;)... it's all about layers... you want to try sitting at a laptop for 3 hours around midnight capturing a sequence of 93 avi's for a lunar mosaic

and thanks for all the comments i really enjoyed the theme could say it was right up my street :D i may try setting the camera up in the car again and having another go

a little late this week ,i was looking forward to this weeks theme when i read the theme last week i had a few ideas i wanted to try but i really have not had time, but as luck would have it i had already booked a track day for saturday at bedford autodrome which is run by ex racing driver jonathan palmer http://www.palmersport.com/ great venue and had a really good day allthough it was bl**dy freezing and foggy which didnt help trying to get some decent shots, for me this is my money no object car so had to be this week choice .
things i have learned
1 there is some dust somewhere hopefully on the lens
2trying to get some decent fast shots in the fog is almost impossible
3 take spare underpants on a trackday as when the bmw spins in front of you you have to move out of it's way quickly is a bit worrying
4 letting your mate thrash your car round a race track is nearly as worrying as sitting next to him thrashing your car round a race track
