Andy Rouse photo

He has to still pay for his expeditions and gear... just us like normal folk! If he does get any freebies, then you would have be pretty twisted to be jealous about it, the chap has clearly worked hard for it.

Anyone can take a trip to the Arctic circle, the Antarctic... he just has the business ability to be able to make it pay for itself, and a bit more on top.

:plusone: he spends multiple $$$$$$ on these trips but he HAS to get the results to make a living. I know some disagree about the use of Captive animals ( i use to be one of them) but you can still get shots of them displaying natural behaviour.

Some of AR'S stuff i dont like but a lot of it i really do

He is sponsored by Warehouse Express, so I doubt he pays for the gear. I think he is now Nikon.

And if you copied the rest of my post, you will also agree that he has worked damned hard for his position, won't you?

Does anyone on here think they're worthy of freebies? I seriously doubt it. You're all happy enough to pop down your local reserves and take shots but who would take the risk of turning it into a business? I say 'you all' because I do make a living from photography - but not nature.

I know I couldn't give up the sports to turn to nature photography as my main source of income! He therefore has my total admiration to be making it in possibly the hardest area of photography to make money in, and I do not begrudge him getting freebie gear!

Personally I like the image and would guess that a picture editor has cropped it. Having met AR twice in as many days recently I can testify to the amount of work he puts in to capture his images. BTW the change to Nikon was self funded.

That makes my mini rant pointless :D

Andy always maintained that he paid for his own gear anyway while he was still with Canon.

Well it is better than any Robin shot I have! Then again I only have one!
Personally I think Janice's comment was a bit tongue in cheek & she was speaking up for all the great Robin shots that have been posted on here. She was also suggesting to folks to get submitting I think.

Its a great shot and full marks to Andy for getting it out there

My wife picked up a book by Andy for my christmas. Have been reading through it but what strikes me is that he regularily takes shots with a 500mm at 1/60th sec, even with a decent tripod and head it takes time to get decent shots due to subject movement-just looking at the data you know he hasnt just turned up and took a snap and went back to his hotel.I respect anyone who has the patience to do what he does and make a living from it.

But just how good can you make a robin look at the end of the day? A robin is a robin...

... now then, who on here can get as good shots of ospreys and golden eagles? ;)

...and have a huge street exhibition in Bath...

Is he doing wolves jumping gates next ;)

Ahhhh now i do believe that is a whole different kettle of fish. As i said i have no problem with the use of Captive breeds, particularly if they are rare aslong as there is no insinuation of the subject being "wild" ;)

Very tongue in cheek Andy ;)

Bath has a huge street exhibitions of Andy Rouses and they look fantastic in large prints.

I understand it is hard being a wildlife photographer and I do not doubt he hasn't worked his arse off to get were he is. But he is just not my type of wildlife photographer I am more into togs like Vincent Munier...

And I completely agree with you as I have tried every type of photography and wildlife is the hardest and is why I enjoy it the most :geek:

When Nikon tried to give me free gear I had to turn it down :D

That is because you have an iddy biddy lens and are crap..........;)

And he still does with Nikon.

Not sure where this warehouse express sponsorship thing came from either, anyone explain this?
AFAIK he just does reviews for them.

I assumed he was sponsored by them, I am probably wrong but as you said he does the reviews and is always mentioned. He also spends a lot of time on the WHE forums...

Ok he use to spend time on the forum, I haven't been there for a while TP is a lot better :)

good job you didnt see the original reply then

No but I can :naughty:   Nawty nawty boy.

FWIW, I do like the AR robin shot, its a perfectly competent and very seasonal picture, everything about it is just right but I still think there are at least equally good, if not better, shots from various people here too.

Oooooh I wanna see :D

Andy Rouse is more than an excellent photographer. He is a brilliant publicist for his work too.

many of his expeds are funded by him giving lectures to the other cruise passengers. Like Heather Angel before him, he is good at keeping his name to the fore - that is what helps sell his pictures above other poeples'.

Put two pictures on the eds desk, both equally good - which would you go for to make a big headline? the other reason behind the use of this shot is the chance to point out that even world travelling photographers can find good pictures in their back garden. They couldn't have used someone else's picture to illustrate that. It is a great piece of PR from the man.
