Android / video question

This should be really simple but Google isn't cooperating....

I want to

1. Put my Xperia Z3 on a tripod (easy)
2. Press a button on a remote control that will start it videoing
3. Press either the same button or another which will stop if videoing

That seems easy but it looks like a bluetooth remote won't control the native camera so for stills I'd have to install an app.

Does anybody know if 2 & 3 are possible and what I would need to make them work? I bet I'm running a really recent version of Android.

Looks like it uses IR instead of Bluetooth.
