Does anyone know how to root a Sony XZ Premium which doesn't allow the bootloader to be unlocked? Running Android 9 and I'm struggling to find a solution.

Youtube has several options on sony. You may have to sift through some 12y olds guessing.

I've done Samsung before but it's the bootloader issue which I think may cause the problem here. I've come across some sites which claim it roots on the fly so to speak but you don't know for sure until you pay. Got some photos to recover, not the end of the world if I can't do it but if there's a way then I'd prefer to.

Thanks but won't work because my bootloader can't be unlocked.

Can't help, genuinely curious as to why you need/want to root, as you can deal with bloatware otherwise these days in Android.

Need to root to do full photo recovery but I think it's a lost cause.

XDA forums will have plenty of information about rooting most Android phones.
I gave up rooting my Samsung phones when they introduced knox security.

Ah yes, that's one less thing I have to worry about, having sold my soul to Mr Google*. No smugness here, though, not from someone who ended up (relatively recently) having to pay a data recovery service to salvage some 600Gb of images off a hard drive that I hadn't quite got around to setting up a proper backup regime.......

* Free auto backup of all images on a Pixel

Actually that's not a bad idea, I've previously setup a phone for guy so that when he takes a photo it automatically syncs with Google photos and can be viewed by the office straight away. It was a work phone so he was warned about being careful with his photography lol But I may do this myself, don't really care if Google sees them as they end up on Facebook anyway.

Thanks but I've looked about a lot and it and like this damn bootloader is the issue. On a positive note at least it's prompting me to make sure it doesn't happen again when the photos could be more important.

Not much relevance if you haven't got a Pixel, but may interest others that do, the current implementation of the free photo storage is defined by photos uploaded from the phone, regardless of what they were taken on, people may not have realised that.

To explain, Google Photos provides free storage for images in "high quality" but only Pixels get original resolution (others are subject to a 16Mb original size and will be resampled). This means that, if you have a Pixel and can be bothered, you can have free unlimited storage at original resolution of ALL your images (including 4k video) by uploading through your phone. To do this you need an OTG adapter with a card reader, OS will take over once it has discovered it or you can use ES File Explorer app or the like to move the images onto your phone and delete them when they are uploaded.
