Yes
I have managed to talk Orange into letting me upgrade my phone early due to problems with my current phone and the balls up they have made with handling my complaint (another story).

But I am torn as to which phone to upgrade to, do I go for:

1 the HTC Desire

or

2 the Samsung Galaxy S

I like the HTC sense as already have the Hero, but on the other hand I have seen the HD video on the Samsung and impressed very much so.

Anybody out there had experience of these phones?
Love to hear your real world experiences of either phones???

Cheers

Phil

I love my Desire. I chose it over the Galaxy simply on price though.

The Galaxy has a slightly bigger and possibly slightly better screen, plus a lot more built in memory.

The Desire is built better and of course has that lovely Sense UI. The only issue I have is that I run out of internal memory very easily as I can't install apps to the SD card. This will be fixed when I get Android 2.2, but at the moment it's a pain.

I wouldn't swap my Desire for a Galaxy now though, I've grown to like it too much :)

The Desire HD is due mid-October and will be a nice step up from both of these phones if you can wait another month.

desire defo... have pre ordered my desire hd :) should be with me 9th oct :)

if you can not wait for Desire HD then go Desire :)...im waiting for HD...or win7..dunno yet ;)

I got the Desire.
All apps on SD card - we have Froyo.

Not played with the Samsung, but it is meant to be a good bit of kit.
Saying that, not had any probs with the desire (non HD).

Stokes mind me asking what network your on to get the date of 9th?

Aligibbs it's been a longstanding problem with connection and phone problems etc

Thanks for the opinions everyone

I have recently got the HTC Desire.. very nice phone.. but I do begin to regret not going with a Blackberry or a Win7 phone.. I need my diary/calander for work and the incompatibility between Android and Outlook is a pita.

Same here for me. I wouldn't say no to a galaxy S either. The manufacturers seem to be able to leap frog each other with new tech and upgrades every so often. Good for us users. A strong reason to love Android imo

I have the HTC Wildfire and love it

I use Google calendar for my appointments/calendar and it works a treat

I just took delivery of my Desire yesterday - absolutely love it!

Simple to set up ,I have all my widget and apps on the homescreen that I use regularly. It is a breath of fresh air compared to my old Nokia 5800.

I would recommend it.

don't forget to download angry birds ;)

Well I've got the Google Nexus 1, which is basically the same hardware as the Desire and I love it.
The Nexus is more open to being customised. Mine was running 2.2 way before it was officially released by Vodafone.
Now running the Cyanogen mod with full root access and that's now got a 720p HD camera!

Not sure if it's available on anything other than Vodafone though.

not sure it is not syncing with outlook.....mine hero is 24/7 in sync with my work exchange server so it syncs not only mail but calendar as well, so what I see at outlook at work i see on mine hero

incompatibility between Android and Outlook
I moved all my contacts with it?

About the HTC Desire.... Great phone but if you wish to play music through the phones own speaker forget it, its rubbish. Plus the screen isn't usable in sunlight unlike the Galaxy.

I was going to go for a HTC Desire but when the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S were released and the reviews favoured it, I changed my mind.
Hopefully Android 2.2 (froyo) will be released for it in the next few days.
There is fantastic third party development going on for this phone and if you like to tinker, there are various custom ROMs and hacks for the phone.
There have been beta builds of 2.2 released and although these are not perfect, the latest build is rock solid and being able to install apps onto the internal SD card is a nice feature.

The HTC Desire was using the amoled screen but because Samsung couldn't supply them fast enough, they've switched to a Sony screen which I believe is an LCD.
The Galaxy users a super amoled screen and it certainly makes a difference and @ 4", it's pretty good for multimedia.

The HTC Desire HD does sound promising but the battery capacity and screen don't seem to fair as well as the Galaxy S.
The HTC Desire is better built but the Galaxy S isn't going to fall apart in your hands and the bonus of having 8GB of storage is nice as well.

bit off topic but : are you coming to next london meet on 2nd october ? if yes, I may ask you to show me your Galaxy ;)

Play music from your phone through your HiFi with one of these HERE for £2 instore (link for Illustration purposes only).

Plus for the price THESE are very good

If you use GPS for anything, such as satnav, steer well clear of the Samsung Galaxy S. It's problems are well documented on the xda developers site. Its build quality doesn't match up to the Desire either, although its Super Amoled screen is great.

Personally, I'm waiting for the HTC Desire HD being released here, in about 10 days :D

10 days ?!?!?! who told you :suspect:
which network ??!?!
Im due to an upgrade and am witing for HD ;D

I've been umming and ahhing for months now about whether to upgrade from my ~5 year old Windows Mobile phone, vascillating between Desire, Galaxy S or, God forbid, an iPhone. Having left things as long as I have I thought I might even plump for a Desire HD (perhaps even a new Windows Phone 7 device), but of course the cost over the life of the contract would sure mount up, and I barely make calls - I really wanted a convenient device for information access on the move.

Anyway, after following this thread - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/orange-san-francisco-android-2-1-wv/763425 - for a while I have bought a PAYG Orange San Francisco, unlocked it for $3 and am now running it with my GiffGaff SIM. I have to say that I am seriously chuffed with the phone. It cost me £83 delivered (with a bit of blagging), £2 for the unlock and will be just £10 per month for an all I can eat data plan, with minutes and texts as well. I did not have to "waste" £10 on a worthless Orange SIM topup.

There's plenty of excitement about this phone over on Modaco as well, where it's referenced as the ZTE Blade.

I'm sure the more expensive phones have their virtues, but this little fellow is a bargain.

Review here - http://android.modaco.com/content/z...318802/paul-reviews-the-orange-san-francisco/.

If Android then find the one with best picture recognition software. If you have a PC then you can google general picture recognition software that is excellent for searching images on your computer but if you wish to focus on a face on a mobile phone then you need software that can be used for picture recognition on the phone and Android software seems to be OK for apps that do this sort of thing.

HTC Desire HD can be ordered from Tmobile on contract from today :)

Ordered mine a couple of days ago, on Vodafone. No stock until at least the 14th though, and there may be a further delay yet :(

hmmm it does not say pre-order on tmobile site .... im due to an upgrade on sunday so will give them a call then ... still havent decided if I will go for HD or iphone....have to say that I like android but HD may be too big, and I love screen in iphone ...and it is not as huge as HD ;)

will see what they say and how much they will want from me for it ...

You'll probably get a cheaper deal if you jump ship and get a new contract with another supplier. I've stayed with Vodafone, but could have saved £5 a month if I'd moved to T-Mobile.

Just had a Vodaphone upgrade from a Nokia 6210 navigator- which i just got rid to PhoneXchange £50, for an HTC Wildfire, great little phone, it's smaller than the Desire and the screen resolution is less but it does about the same.
I was paying 30 p.m now 20 p.m so i'm happy :)

desire hd is delayed :( had mine preordered since 18th sept.... through mobile-phones direct... its going to be on a t-mobile, at the time of preordering was the only deal around, but still stands at the best one for my needs...

latest news is it failed some google test and will be held up until the 22nd oct.... pants!

Just bought an android phone from Orange on PAYG.

It's called the San Francisco and for £99 it's a bargain :)

Got the san francisco too, cracking bargain great screen unlocked it for $3 to get away from orange
