Not played with custom roms since I had the first nexus so may not be fully up to date, but, I assume the phone is 'rooted'. If not, when I used to do this, you wont be able to use a custom rom etc.

The whole custom ROM scene has changed a lot since them Paul. I too remember when you had to gain root permissions before pushing custom recoveries and ROM's.
Most phones today don't need that anymore.
Certainly for my LG G2 I put on TWRP followed by CyanogenMod.
Then from within CyanogenMod I was able to just click a button for root access.
Certainly makes customisation far easier in my eyes.
