Depends what kind of apps you want.

I personally use on a (semi) regular basis...

Free
Opera Mobile and Firefox - Web browsers
Kingsoft Office - Office suite
Jorte - appointments/schedule type app
iReader - ebook app
Aldiko - ebook app
photoshop Express - mini photoshop
Samsung Mobile Print - wireless printing to my erm wireless printers.
MX Player - music
Wordoid - game
Wordsearch - game
Piano Perfect - piano
Mahjong
Various Camera apps
ElectroDroid - Electronics reference and converter

Paid
Root Explorer (needs to be rooted) - File manager
Crosswords - crosswords from many daily newspapers
Solo - Guitar

only 2 i ever use on galaxy note, but they are brilliant are :-

zedge - free wallpapaers/ringtones (mp3's)/ live wallpapers/ etc.

tubemate - allows you to save any youtube video straight to your phone.
you can also search for any song/video and it allows you to
change it to mp3 !, a great app.

Dropbox
GPS test
Distance and Area measurement
WiFi file transfer
Flashlight

Try to keep moving apps to you SD card, you can find space becomes limited sooner than you think when things update.

I think it comes installed with the best one. Flipboard.

Agree with this. Just downloaded it last night and it is the best all in one news/social networking app I have ever used. Even linked to my Flickr and 500px accounts as well as Instagram and the others! It's great. You should get it. It's free!

Jukefox - far better than the bog standard music player

The ones i use are:

Endomondo: walking/exercise/fitness tracking app.
Flipboard: great way to integrate your feeds/facebook in one place
Sun Surveyor: see where the sun is going to be, useful for photography
Waze: social satnav and traffic notifications.
WeatherPro: excellent weather app and very accurate 14 forecasts
TP forums: of course!
Sonic CD: Enhanced version of the Sega CD classic game. lots of fun.
MD.Emu: Sega Megadrive Emulator, again lots of fun.
HyperQuiz: General knowledge quiz, love this.
AngryBirds - all 4 games... great fun to play on a rainy sunday afternoon
LanSolCal/Widgets - a nice little app that gives you the sunrise, sunset, twilight, moon phases in a lovely widget and more detailed info in the app.
DOF Calculator: good for calculating dof for group shots etc on the go.
Google Drive: Nice integrated online storage, very useful for carrying around files.

And maybe the biggie i couldn't live without:

Swiftkey. If you do any amount of typing, you need this app. it's a replacement keyboard that learns how you write. it's scary because it starts to read your mind. Just updated to v3, even better.

cheers folks :) ...gonna be busy over the next few days now :)

not much help unless you have a premium account, but my most used app has to be Spotify, as well as GooManager for rom updates

I forgot to mention go launcher ex, a great replacement home screen application which is much nicer than many handset customised ones like touchwiz.

One nice feature is that go launcher supports landscape and portrait orientation and it's a bit more customisable with a few eye candy type transitions and stuff.

I don't like the way Go Launcher wants to keep taking your money for 'addons', I'm a long time user of ADW Launcher and find it works best for me.

any decent safe sites to acquire these from?

All available on Google Play (used to be the Android Market), just hit the play icon on your phone and type the names into the search.

Dolphin broswer, I find this very good indeed and prefer it to others I have tried.
Dooors, A 50 level puzzle game,
RAC Traffic info
Marine Traffic, finds all manor of boats at sea and gives details of them.
Moto Deals, great daily offers for moto service stations

if youve headed over to android, i really recommend popping on xda forums and getting a custom rom and kernel for your device. Will speed it up and give you so many more options!

running paranoid android on my gnote
