Makes British justice look positively draconian.

At the minimum term that's about a month and a half per murder

His sentence can be lengthened if he is deemed a danger to society. If he still confirms his beliefs in 10 or even 25 years he will stay locked up.

More like society will be a danger to him. I don't think he'd last long if released, even in 25 years time.

Surely he should have been given 21 year for each murder, not 21 years total, shocking

So now he gets to 'address the court' and further distress the relatives of the dead :shake:

hmmm does seem a bit harsh.....

Whilst at times Draconian I do in certain circumstances support the US Supermax style.... remember watching one documentary about them, and one guy was sentenced to something like 435 yrs.... as they tend to add them all up instead of serving concurrently.

21 years is the max in Norway, but as said above - they can keep him in...

Personally, I'd just bung him in the general prison population.... would save a fortune.

I'll leave it there - I meant harsh as in US Supermax style, personally I think Breivik got off lightly

I think I'd sooner pay to have him in solitary for the rest of his life, if he's not nuts now 10 years of talking to a brick wall will send him there, he'll never see a day of freedom again

Even better - give him to the product testers! let them use him instead of rabbits / mice etc, cut his eyelids off and poor in shampoo to see if it 'stings' etc etc

and then put him in a cell with two very large ethnic gentlemen named Doris and Ethel. . . .

.DAVID.

better still - put him on an island. . . . . .. with the relatives of his victims.

He said from day one that being found insane would be worse than death (not sure of the actual quote) as this would mean his views would be that of a madman. He's got what he wanted. Surely the Norwegian justice system could have "made sure" he was found insane just to wipe the smug grin off his deranged face???

not quite, he's always said that the only fair verdicts would of been insanity or death. By finding him sane the courts have found him responsible for his own actions. Which he was. Thats no bad thing. an insanity verdict would have absolved him from responsibility

Or just shoot him, even cheaper and gets what he deserves!

and by not executing him you avoid martyring him and just let him rot in obscurity, exactly where he belongs

But by finding him sane he believes it legitimises his views and actions. An insanity verdict would have meant a lifetime in a mental institution with little chance of release.

it doesn't legitimise his views at all. Theres a difference between having a hateful viewpoint and being insane. Look at the backlash in Norway against his extreme right wing view points since his actions.

An insanity verdict would of been saying he wasn't responsible for his actions. He was. He committed an absolutely horrendous crime, motivated by his hateful ideology,he's responsible for that.

Being realistic. He'll never be released anyway.

They can't go making things up to wipe a grin off someone's face.

That's why I put it in ""
You're right, they can't. But I'm sure it's happened from time to time in many countries.

Hugh, I fully agree with you but this is a man who knew he would go to jail. That's what he wanted. He would have known there was no escape. He was making a political statement. Ok, the response has not been what he would have wanted but he has had a stage for his views.
He will probably not be released but I would imagine a lifetime of trying to prove his sanity to an unsympathetic panels of psychiatrists would have been worse for him.
Maybe it's just the fact that I don't think he should get what he wanted?

I think thats part of it. I hope thats the end for the stage for his view. No matter how unsympathetic the panel was if he'd been found insane someone would of had to listen to his evil rantings while he tried to prove he wasn't. This way he can rot in a box and no one has to listen

I read earlier about his cell he lives in. I wouldn't mind being locked up in somewhere like that.
Shame he wasn't in a US style prison.

Andy that was a very interesting link.
