As those who have been following the complete horlicks of my XW6000 work station and then its miraculous recovery.......as part of recovery process I decided to reinstall XP pro....now when I hit the key to boot from disk all I get is a general protection fault..... What is this? I googled but still none the wiser.....

Gives me lots of what looks like hex code (I think that's what they call it) will take a shot and post it up shortly

general protection fault..... What is this?

Having had to work with the paging mechanism, descriptor tables and privilege levels in code in the past, I could explain, but it's way beyond the scope of this forum.

Duff software or hardware basically.

Yep! goes to boot from CD ....Press any key and then cd spins up and this happens.....have tried 2 different drives as well as a usb

That indicates that it's in the process of initialising, as it's running at ring 0 and the paging mechanism is not enabled yet, so it might still be in the bootloader.

Is the XP CD clean and readable?

Tried xo, xp pro and Windows 7.......ask doing the same.....

Try a linux boot disk. You may get a more helpful error message.

Try some of these things :

Check the RAM is properly seated.

Disconnect the hard drive (you don't need it for the install CD to boot, it just won't be able to install)

If all else fails, download memtest86+ and make a bootable USB flash drive with it on, then leave it to run.
