Hi everyone

Haven't been here for a while so... I basically ran low on funds and sold my Nikon gear. :( The little I had of it by then...

Now a relative in my family has given me his Canon 5D ii to borrow. I am hoping to redefine the word ''borrow''. It had been used professionally by a friend of his who didn't want it anymore. (?) So I got lucky! It seems easy enough to operate after having the Nikon D7000. Actually I really like it! First ff camera also. I don't notice anything obviously wrong with it either. It had been sitting gathering dust for 2 years would you believe. I would have sold a kidney 2 years ago for that even though I was a Nikon guy.

Question 1 : I tried to check the shutter count but couldn't use the online facility I used before. Can someone help please? I can send a recent file for example. I can't connect the camera to the pc without buying a new cable which I otherwise don't need. I bought a card reader. I'd like to know the count and estimated total count.

Question 2: I suppose some of you still use this machine. I need to learn something about Canon like inexpensive primes for portraits and what you think of the lens I got with it. It's the 28-135 3.5-5.6 macro

Question 3: So the lens with it, the 28-135 needs a lens hood. Easy to get ?

Other opinions, experiences, comments are very welcome :)

@sunnyside_up uses the 5d2, she churns out some incredible stuff with it so it's obviously very capable in the right hands.

The venerable 50mm f1.8 STM is around £100 new and offers good IQ. There is also the Canon 85mm f1.8 which is well regarded and a fantastic portrait lens.

No idea on the lens but you'd be able to pick a hood up for it from eBay or Amazon.

You should be able to upload a picture to www.myshuttercount.com and it will tell you the actuations. Alternatively there is an EOS one (eoscount?) but i think it charges. If you have Photoshop then you can find it in the exif details too.

HTH's.

The 5d2 is a great camera and plenty of people still use them!

If you can, ditch the 28-135 (it won't do the 5d2 justice) and try and replace it with a used 24-105 f/4 L.
