An interesting offer – D600

I currently have a D7100, 16-85, 70-300 and 50 f1.8g.

My friend has a D600 with the kit lens.

He does not use it enough and needs a small amount of cash and has enquired if I would swap my D7100 with 16-85 for his D600 and kit lens (the cash difference is to be negotiated!).

My 70-300 and 50mm would work on the D600 with no loss in resolution – I think. But if I’m wrong please correct me.

The question is, is this a good idea? I know I would be losing some focal length and the 50mm would become actual 50mm, but the notice in IQ would/should be noticeable?
 
What's more important to you, AF or an extra stop of ISO cleanliness??

That's the big difference in the cameras...

DOF is different but both FX and DX will have their pros and cons over that.

If I were in your situation I'm just not sure I could be doing with the AF area of the D600...but the ISO stop would be nice.

The D600 will give you an extra stop of performance in low light as Phil says. The D600 has slightly better DR too. The kit lens that comes with the D600 gets good reviews (I've not used it so ...) and yes, both the 50mm and 70-300 will work fine on the D600.

The D7100 offers a greater number of af points (again as Phil says) and offers the extra "reach" of a crop camera ...

If you fancy going FF this is a relatively cheap way of doing it. I like the D600 fwiw.
 
I know the reach on the DX will be greater, but will cropping images on an FX give the same result or nopt as clean/sharp?
 
In Dx mode the D600 gives images of DX (24 x 16) image area: 3,936 x 2,624 pixels. I think the D7100 will give a higher pixel count but the D600 might give better results in other ways. Since you (presumably) have access to both bodies, do a comparison set of shots and see if You're happy with crops from the D600.

While it's always possible to approximate the extra reach of a crop body by cropping into an FF shot in PP, it's way harder to get the wider angles available from an FF body if using a crop camera.

IIRC, the kit lens for the D600 is (or was) the 24-120 f/4 - by many accounts a good performer (in crop terms, it'll give you the angle of view that an 18-80 gives you so it'll be effectively marginally longer at the short end and shorter at the long end than your current 16-85).

Obviously it all depends on how much you are going to pay on top of the swap?

It does seem to be now but a while back when I was considering a D600, I was offered it with the 24-120 f/4 VR as a kit. I know that the D700 came as a kit with the earlier variable aperture version of the 24-120 VR which wasn't so hot!
 
So far after only 24 hour i can only say that im all ready in love with this camera.
 
What would everyone think is a deal worth going for cash wise?
 
Ok. Lots to consider!
 
Going to take the D600 and 70-300 for a spin this weekend and see how I get on!
