An idea for your consideration

A few things have occured recently that have led me to a dangerous, and possibly stupid, idea. I would be interested to know what people think of it.

I suspect many of us have cameras that we rarely use or don't particularly get on with.

I also suspect many of us have cameras in mind that we would like to try.

So, perhaps we could have some sort of F&C swap shop.

I haven't thought through details of how it would work but I'm sure, if the idea flies, we could work that out.

What do you think ladies and gents?

Are you thinking about permanent exchanges or short term swaps so that people can try different kit without having to buy it? I think the only risk with this idea is risk of losing kit in the post or accidental damage.

Given that even cheap cameras have gone AWOL during the travelling camera challenges, I'd imagine the mods would have something to say, either way.

Mind you, there's nothing to stop us doing a Swap Shop in the classifieds, as far as I know. Instead of swapping Battleships for a Kerplunk or anything by the Boomtown Rats, we could swap an Ensign folder for a Soviet SLR (and a commie camera would be nicely apt for the whole endeavour)

As Keith says, a swapshop in classifieds could possibly work.
That way if these swaps were to be permanent then any financial differences in value could be dealt with within the TP rules for sales / trades.

I could be interested although being out of the Uk would probably make it more complicated than needs be so I wouldn't sulk ( well not too much anyway :D) if I was refused swapshop access

Yeah, classifieds would probably be the best way.

But, maybe we could have a sticky here where items for swap were posted, then conclude the arrangements in the classifieds.

We all know who can help out with the best proposals for handling such as this:D ...... @TheBigYin

I have a spare Nikon F75 kicking about...

:)

I'll swap it for a Zeiss Distagon....

h'mm well it would take me at least 2 years to get through using all the cameras and lenses I have (without swopping and adding gear) and then it's the same for the following years...sorta like painting the forth bridge. But a good idea it you want to try different cameras out.

to be honest guy's i'm only a mod on here, I don't make policy, just enforce it... you'd be better running your ideas past @Marcel - obviously, if he decides whatever you come up with is workable, then I'll help out as and when I can, but I can't give any rulings on it.

I've got a Nikon F301, I'd like to swap for Kerplunk.

This isn't Saturday Swap Shop and Simon is definitely not Noel Edmunds :D... or is he?

I guess the simplest way to run this would be to add a line to a classifieds post saying what you'd be interested in swapping your kit for. I'm sure we all look at classifieds all the time and there is sometimes kit you like the look of but don't have the cash available without going through the effort of selling something of your own first.

Problems could arise when whatever your are swapping for doesn't work or isn't as described. Undoing a monetary transaction if you've used paypal is a lot easier.

I think it would be safer to organise some kind of physical swap meet instead. That way everyone can see what is being swapped rather than the hassle of having it posted to find the courier has rattled it until it didn't work any more.

But would it be any more risky than buying from here using BT?

If it's with a Nikon 105mm f2.3 AIS I'd swop for a Canon T70 and might even throw a lens in as well ;)
Sorry Brian, a Canon's no use to me. If you haven't got Kerplunk I might be persuaded to swap for Hungry Hippos, Operation or possibly Mousetrap.

Is this a proposal for a sticky in F&C where an initial request or something is posted.
Then when some agreement is made its posted officially in the classifieds

or what ?

considerations -

discussion of trades/whatever outside the classifieds
the idea that the discussion is born in F&C, even though it becomes official/legal/compliant in the classifieds, it still kinda excludes anyone outside that clique.
should the "request" just be posted straight to classifieds
it seems as though the idea.....F&C swaps for F&C members, will always be at odds with the rules governing transactions outside the classifieds, therefore it has to be open to all and the risks associated with that, accepted.
still....you can choose NOT to try Brians T70 I suppose..:)

Pretty much nailed the objections to it there John.... which is why there's no way in hell i'm going to say yay/nay on it - its got to be signed off by the owners if it's going to fly...

Well AFAIK no one is breaking any rules if members LOAN gear (a sorta swop\loan) to each other for a few months. Afterall why isn't the camera (forgot the nick name ) passed to members banned....same thing as the the first person who posted the camera is actually loaning it and in one case nearly away for a year....as it got back yet?

Traveling camera is a group project not a transaction.
I like the idea of a swap/try-arama, but I can't see it working how its been suggested and still comply with the rules 100%.
I know there is the odd "discussion" or inquiry made here buying and selling, but its just something that comes up in conversation, there is no initial intent to sell or buy anything, although it is against the rules, mods generally see it for what it is, a developing conversation, and it takes a discretionary slide under the door, I don't think you can take the door off its hinges...:D

H'mm well someone owns the camera or does the last person on the list throw it away ;) it all depends on how strict the rules are applied and unfortunately if anyone complains then the mods have to look in to it.

I think that Simon intended this thread to discuss the idea in general and see if it was feasible in some form. It wasnt meant as a definitive fully formed idea.

Does he realise what he's started :runaway::runaway::D:D

Sorry mark, if I'd given a bit of thought and realised it to be more logical to tag Marcel, I wouldn't have disturbed you from you sunday slumber :p.....return to the couch young man, we'll await Marcels input to tell us that it can't possibly work without Noel Edmunds being at the heel! :D

So, it's looking like this idea might be holed below the waterline by forum rules. Using the classifieds is fine, in fact I'm going to try it, but I thought it would be good to encourage the idea of swapping film cameras on a fairly regular basis.

Oh well, it's not sunk yet and may still be salvaged. We'll see.

It would be worth knowing (maybe) what people have, to see if anyone is interested in trying out a particular item.

Any thoughts?

Well, to start the ball rolling, I have a Yashica Minister D and an Olympus Pen half frame. Open to swop/exchange offers.

Yes, I suppose that's exactly what I was thinking. I guess the discussion is around the best way to do it without breaking forum rules and minimising risk.

The idea is to encourage people who wouldn't be bothered about the classifieds to think about offering unused / unloved stuff to others, and to avoid the hassle of selling something to buy something else when someone has the very something else they'd be happy to swap for whatever you were going to sell.

Does that make sense?

The question is does it make sensé to you cos i aint à clue what you're on about:D:D:D

With all those funny foreign marks over your letters, I ain't a clue what you're on about either.

I can't work out your accent.

:D
