Is it me or does anyone else stand in awe when they see low flying military aircraft? Or that new Royal Marines ad they are showing in the cinemas just now, which makes the hair on my neck stand on end. Regardless of what your stance is on war and peace, you've got to admire technical achievement.

I love looking at the shots that people capture of low flying aircraft in the forums. Tanks are awesome too. I'd love to drive one of those, or even experience what it is like to be in it, good or bad. Wouldn't want to be in a war of course so I have the utmost respect for those that are and doing their job.

The sounds of screaming jets at the Leuchars airshow. Hummers are awesome too.

This is totally out of left field. I've not lost my mind. Just something I've always like and wondered if there are any others out there?

If you really want the hair on the back of your neck to stand up get yourself along to a show where a Spitfire is doing a display:notworthy: It will also put a lump in your throat at the same time:thumbs:

If you REALLY want the hair to stand up, join the forces lmao. The Bovington tank museum where I am offers tank experiences I think, over they're own custom designed track. And the museum itself is simply superb.

I did think of joining in some sort of IT role, but one of my best friends served in the US military and said that if there was a full scale war with another power the IT infrastructure would be the first to get hit... so I stuck to building websites and software *yawn*. :D

Where is Bovington?

My Dad was a Desert Rat (1st-generation!) and had a book of cartoons, with one of a wife/Mum back home saying: "But I thought he'd be safe in a tank."

Bovington Tank Museum is in deepest Dorset.
 
:thumbs:You could always join the Army and drive a Centurion AVRE which is powered by the Spitfire Merlin engine, well it was in my day they have been replaced now, but one of them firing up with exhausts removed is an absolutely awesome sound:thumbs: 4 gallons to the mile not really green though despite the colour they paint it:thumbs:

IMO WW2 aircraft are the best looking, sounding and flying objects in he sky.

Duxford airshows are superb for close up displays, a must for all photographers.

I too love the sound of the old prop stuff.. but you just cant beat HEAVY METAL!!! lol..

I like the military shows, but if you really want to experience that stuff go join up.. its still safer than you think! even if your in the rear echelons with your IT stuff, it would really have to be a massive war to get to you! we ALWAYS have Air Supremacy these days! you'd be far enough away from the grit..

I served in the first Gulf war amongst other places, the sound of these things is quite something when you are depending on their support... quite reassuring... :thumbs:
 
You can actually see the "rivets flying in formation" in hyakuhei's photo. :thumbs:
 
We get 2 spifires and a Lancaster flying in formation (usually a triangle ;)) over Haworth every year. Very, Very impressive sounds and size.
 
my mum and dad live near the BBMF airbase, and if im visiting in the summer you can be sitting having dinner or whatever, all of a sudden the house starts to shake, and 4 very low Merlins fly over awesome sight :)

If you want to be REALLY close to 4 Merlins, try this http://www.lincsaviation.co.uk/popup.cfm?p_n=48324&p_i=48324 :) the only other running Lanc in the UK, it isnt airworthy as the airframe has expired but they do full throttle taxi runs in it :)

When i was learning to fly, one of my instructors was ex military, and flying down a fire break in a forest at over 100mph with the rotors below tree top level is quite exhilirating :D

Here's hoping they can, that would be simply brilliant. And I really would pay that to fly in one. I am easily impressed though, I thought my flight to Cyprus in a C-130 Herc was aweomse...all 7 hours of it (thanks to France and other countries not allowing British military aircraft in their airspace :bat:)

I was at Duxford airshow the year Douglas Bader died, they managed to get 4 spitfires to fly past in the missing man formation,there were some tears shed that afternoon by most of the crowd.

I also saw the Blackbird fly at Alconbuy in the late 80s, even stood on the ground it looked like it had come from the future and when it flew :eek: fantastic,it's a real shame it's in the history books now :(

That's a brilliant shot - planes make me smile too, none more so than the retired English Electric Lightning. An awesome aeroplane. If the lottery numbers come up, I'll buy a flight in one that takes folk on jollies in South Africa!
