Our current, (2.1/2 year old) Daewoo American style fridge freezer is beginning to play silly beggars, so have decided to get a replacement, don't want to be ar@ed with repairs.:)

We don't want/need a water or ice dispensing machine, but would like something reliable. Can anyone recommend one that is going to last a bit longer?

I have a Samsung american style fridge/freezer (I don't know what model) but it's been brilliant. I have it insured as well.

I use Domestic and General for my appliance insurance. I have my cooker, fridge/freezer, tumble dryer, washing machine, dishwasher and all my gaming consoles insured for 14.99 per month and there is no excess or hidden fees to pay if anything needs repaired. I've well and truely got my moneys worth out of them but never had to call them out for the fridge.

I'd be expecting it to last a lot longer than 2 and a half years and would be making loud noises to Daewoo.

Regardless of warranty you have a right to expect a fridge to last more than 2 1/2 years....I would be speaking to Daewoo.

Many thanks everyone for your replies.

Ruth and Chris, I understand fully your Comments regarding the warranty, but sadly it's not quite as simple as that.

We went on holiday on the 4th of this month and before leaving I turned everything electrical off at the sockets, except the fridge freezer and the video recorder, which I had set to record TV programmes whilst we were away. On our return a week later, I found that the RCCB had tripped, but none of the breakers. Obviously everything in the fridge freezer was ruined and the smell was awful. Despite numerous attempts at cleaning both inside the cabinet areas and the condensing compartment at the back, the smell is still there, but no where near as bad, so it looks a replacement appliance is on the cards.

The RCCB must have tripped sometime during the first weekend as none of the programs I had set to record on Sunday 5th had recorded. I do recall that our drive to Suffolk was through a couple of storms and heavy rain, so maybe the weather could have caused the trip. I should add that the freezer and all other appliances have worked without issue since. It's just this awful bl@@dy smell.:(

I wouldn't touch Beko unless they've definitely sorted out the cause of some of their older models being dangerous and catching fire.

Don't know why. Our last fridge was a beko, and in fact it still works fine after 11 years.
The problem with the faulty thermostat was fixed very quickly after the recall, but it only effected a few fridges anyway.

Any manufacturer, good or bad can have recalls for faulty components.

Anyway we bought a samsung double door with ice, water dispenser and love it.

Ahh I see. Fair do's. I suspect as the unit still works (albeit a tad pongy), you'd be hard pushed to get a replacement. Shame :-)

Which Samsung did you get? I have read a lot of bad reports about Samsung American fridge freezers.

We have a Samsung smart TV and think it's brilliant.

There must be some trick to getting rid of the pong surely. A bowl of bicarbonate of soda stood in there for a few days or something. Unless your Missus is just using it as an excuse to get a posh shiny new fridge. Surely not.

my parents had a HOTPOINT one for 14 years, then last xmas it started playing up, the freezer worked but the fridge wasnt getting very cold,

so had someone come look at it, couldnt be 100% sure of the fault, said due to its age the parts werent available, anyhoo, left it for a few days, cleaned the back of it, then switched it back on, and suddenly it was working again, apparently it was probably because something on the back got clogged up, and caused a blockeage (i cant for the life of me remember what it was, but remember seeing it on the internet as a sort of common issue), unfortunately my parents ahad aready bought a new hotpoint,

so they sold it to a guy i worked with for £100 and a year later he's still happy as larry with it.

Our Siemens stainless steel side-by-side fully clad is now coming up to 15 years old. And going strong, super quiet, very efficient and controls are properly integrated opposed to those ugly off the cut outs that other brands seem to employ. Highly recommended. I would get another if required.

Beko now use fire resistant materials in all their appliances, and electrical components are isolated in fireproof compartments, according to the Beko rep at work.

There was a thing on watchdog about samsung ones a few years ago.

Good to know

Yes Samsung fridges had a terrible reputation but I'm sure they've sorted it by now. Beko always does well in which reviews as do lg. I think the Panasonic's where getting top marks from memory.
