I'm not very happy... I've never really understood what Amazon Prime was until recently, but have since discovered that I have been paying £50 a year for it since 2009! OMG! I cannot believe it. I've been paying for something for four years and I haven't been aware. Furious. Don't suppose I have a leg to stand on trying to get some of that money back? I must have agreed to some small print along the way...

I've explained to them that I've never really used the service, having not been a regular Amazon customer. We'll see what they say, but if the auto-renew is in the T&Cs I'm not holding out much hope.

It is exactly that, when I worked in credit cards we would regularly get called related to this, amazon used to be quite good at refunding it if you've not actually used it but I'd not be sure about them refunding 4 years worth...that would suggest you need to start checking your account a little more regularly if you be not spotting transactions

That's the thing, I do regularly check my statements. I have no idea how I've missed this each year! I'm gutted! :(

I have paid more for Amazon Prime that I have paid for the total cost of my orders in the past four years...

I think when they first launch it there were some who accused them of not being entirely clear on the charges and people signed up without fully understanding what they would be charged... They do at least explain the service better now.
If you use Amazon a lot, next day delivery is important to you and you use the other services (i.e. Kindle Owners library etc) then, on the face of it, it's not a bad deal. Personally, I'd struggle to get my money's worth as I'm happy to wait the 2 or 3 days extra for free, 'standard' delivery on most items anyway.
You can turn off your 'Prime' membership by going to 'Your Account' and clicking on 'Manage Prime Membership'. At least that way your membership will cease on the next 'anniversary' of your original sign-up date.

Yeah, thanks Sirius! I've just gone into the membership settings and switched it off  Still, I've definitely not benefited from £200 worth of the service - I just don't use Amazon enough. Perhaps when they view my purchase history they will be inclined to offer me some compensation.

@neil_g @boyfalldown @MWHCVT @Sirius - Well you won't believe it... Amazon UK CS have been brilliant and are refunding me the whole lot!! Four years worth! The CS Rep said this:

"In this case, since you're not aware of this membership, I have made a one time exception and issued a refund for the membership fee for the four years (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)... Please understand that I'm issuing this refund as an exception and that this is against our standard policy."

I have been extremely lucky in this instance. I am just relieved that the CS Rep believed my story!

The question now is, what lens you buying?

I'm going to Iceland this December, so this money is going straight into the bank of Iceland... Wait, that doesn't seem like such a great idea :p

Thanks for that!

Tea/keyboard interface.

My only problem with their CS is a recent development (I think). Rather than taking any returns to a post office, I had to take a recent one to a little corner shop instead. Where parking is a PITA and the shop itself is way off our usual routes. Stupid thing is that the item is only worth a tenner and the delivery was free (OK, paid by them or the seller) so 2 way delivery has almost certainly swallowed any profit there may have been on the deal.

Amazon CS are really good at making "one time" corrections.

Every time prime is late they add another month to my prime. Which is really cool. Sometimes I order small stuff that I know will be late just to get a free month :)

@Nod = usually there's an option for them to collect a return as well. Free if it was "their fault". Also, they don't accept returns on food. You just get a refund and to keep it.

It's no wonder they can't afford to pay tax......

you can actually choose to not renew automatically, there is an option to tick the box...

Can I ask how this works? I've never had anything late delivered using Prime, but I like free stuff!

They tell you when it will turn up. It doesn't. You log into Amazon and start a chat with a a CS operator. After 5 mins they apologise and give you a free month.

Post round here isn't great so I know if something is coming RM it will probably not arrive next day ;)

The same thing happened to me with Amazon prime, the way i found out about it was because on one occasion the £50 they took sent me overdrawn.
I do regularly check my statements but like the OP i somehow kept missing this payment.

Did you manage to get your money back Swissy?

I called them and complained and got £50 back which was from the last amount they took, the previous ones were lost, lesson learned though.

i'm surprised you didn't notice after the first auto-renewal seeing as they should send you an email to tell you that has just happened....they do with me anyway.

bit narked though that you don't get the same perks over here that you do if you subscribe to Prime in the US...namely unlimited streaming of movies and tv, but even then I feel it is worth it if you use Amazon a lot.

amazon prime is a great idea but don't be fooled you still pay postage on the item within the actual price

i am a amazon prime seller so know the in's and out's any small item amazon charge roughly £1.23 + a packing charge and storage charge so you do end up paying for it as a customer

what i do like is the quick delivery times

the storage online i think is 5 gb for free plus you got other benefits too since moved away from ebay to amazon a lot better

Well, obviously somebody pays for it. But if the item is still as cheap as I can buy it elsewhere, it's not really me.

Amazon customer service is pretty exceptional, but I think the OP was pretty lucky in this instance.

I don't use Prime, because it's not worth it for me. I don't order enough to justify it, and I'm quite content to wait until it arrives by the cheapest option.

thats why i like it sometimes it is far cheaper due to the postage costs alone

when we 1st started we was saving over a £1 per item and sales went through the roof that was just a example on jus 1 product

I signed up for this yesterday and see that cancelling it is just a couple of clicks, so it's easy enough.
Am I right in thinking I now have access to a months worth of free movies? :)

I've had a lot of good experiences with Amazon CS and haven't been disappointed even with problems that was my fault.

I'f you want more Prime just keep making new accounts lol.

I see my Amazon Prime will go up from the renewal date from £50 to £79 with the excuse of it now including 'instant video', with no option to remove the video portion. I will not be renewing, and have set my account to not auto-renew. It used to be a good deal to get free one day delivery, now-a-days qualifying prime items seems to be reducing and the option of next day is also diminishing - never mind the fact that it doesn't always get delivered next day anyway.

While I have pretty good service from Prime I won't be renewing either, just on the principle that they think Prime users should be forced to pay for their video service to have use of other Prime features (I only use it for the next day delivery).

I understand there's a student option, if your a student of course. When my daughter signed up it was 6 months free trial and then half price after that. Don't know if they're still doing it.

I've taken up the free Prime offer a couple of times when Amazon have touted it to me. Then just immediately cancelled it. You still get the free month.

This...every December :-)

There still doing it. I'm currently on the student amazon prime which gives me 6 months free on shipping only (not the online streaming stuff). I just have to remember to cancel it in October.

Can you not cancel it now? I just did with the normal Prime, it'll keep going until October then will stop.
