I noticed on another topic that @Phil V mentioned the unlimited storage of photos on Amazon Prime. Now despite having an amazon prime account for over a year, I'd somehow never noticed this.

I just wonder if there is a practical way for me to use this as backup with my current workflow.

As things stand, I import everything into lightroom, 99% are raw files (nikon which I believe is fine for Amazon). They all end up in standard folder structures in the pictures area of my mac and then I carry out any editing within lightroom and leave it at that until I need to export a jpeg for any reason.

As a last ditch backup option, am I able to automate an amazon cloud synced backup so that all of my raw files are saved on amazon (I guess without edits applied) without me having to manually drag stuff over every time I do an upload?

The best way I found was to use SyncBackPro, there is a trial version.

Did a quick Google and found this... not sure if the 2mb file limit still applies...

This would seem to make Prime Photos ideal for serious photographers, but Amazon imposes some restrictions that call that assumption into question. First, Amazon states that Prime Photos is only for personal, non-commercial use. Second, Amazon says only photos smaller than 2 MB may be uploaded to Cloud Drive, in one of eight allowed file formats. Photographers with high-end cameras often produce images that range from 5 GB to 30 GB, or possibly more. Also, while Amazon allows videos under 20 minutes to be uploaded to Cloud Drive, it mentions only photos as eligible for unlimited Prime Photo storage; other files count against Cloud Drive storage limits. Amazon provides 5 GB of storage to Cloud Drive users at no cost.

Cheers. That sounds similar to Apple Time Machine which I use at present backed up to an external drive. What I really like the idea of is having a completely remote cloud based back up. I'm starting to think I'd be better off not trying to take a shortcut and simply subscribing to one of the many proper cloud based back up services.

On Amazon site:

Automatic Photo Backup
Use the free Amazon Photos app to auto-save your photos to Amazon Drive. Your photos will be safe even if your phone is lost or damaged.

Will be interesting to see how you get on as I too wouldn't mind a off-site cloud backup solution for photos.

No, some raw types are also included in the Prime unlimited allocation. Other file types count against your file contingent.

I use Amazon cloud for backup and have done now for about a year.

My workflow, I don't use Lightroom,
Download from memory card to PC using Bridge which does it's thing with IPTC, description, tags etc.
Drag folder, complete with all images, good, bad and ugly including OOF etc to the cloud app.
Copy the folder to my server
Browse through the folder on the PC and cull unwanted images.

I also have the Amazon app on my server so I can upload from there if need be.

I've just checked, I have 297,697 images and 4.7 GB of video

I finally caved in a got Prime a few months ago and gave their photo uploader a go, it seemed OK, allowed me to pick a top level directory and it started uploading files from there down. Obviously uploads are slower than downloads on ADSL broadband so it was pretty slow, there is also a fairly small video limit. I let it run overnight for a few nights and it did OK but as Roy says above it would take months of this to do it all and I had already exceeded the video limit (and it's only short video clips of the kids, etc.)

Having had a experiment with it I decided to abandon it for couple of reasons, firstly I didn't like the lock-in, I'm not overly convinced that I'll be keeping Prime so then I would still need a back-up and secondly it doesn't store Olympus RAW files and having recently got an Olympus it seemed like a bit of an arbitrary limitation.

Well as a long time Prime member I have recently considered closing my long held Smugmug photo hosting account (which is excellent) saving myself the £50.00 renewal fee and moving all photos to Prime Photos.

Heaven knows how many images I have but it is not feasible to move them to Amazon cloud. The upload time would take take days/weeks maybe. I don't have fibre but even if I did with the fastest fibre upload speed around 15 Mbps it is not on.[/QUOT

Been using Amazon Cloud for over a year. Currently have 2TB uploaded. Amazon recently came out with an app that will auto sync your files to the Cloud. However, I've been having trouble getting it to work. After days of letting it auto sync it ends up freezing with around 300 files left to go. Even after quitting the app and restarting my comp. it gets worse. It's starts all over with around 17,000 files. It's not re-uploading though. Just going through the motion of re-syncing. Which led me to a different app for auto syncing; Odrive. It's free to use for my needs and they do have a cool premium feature - will allow you to temporarily remove the file from your computer to save storage. Then, when you need the file double click or open and it will auto download from Amazon. Since this is my first post I can't provide a link for Odrive. But it ends with .com if anyone is interested. :)

Hope those of you who are so trusting of cloud storage, remember that in the event of your death, you need to make proper provision for your heirs to access your accounts! :)
My own view is that I prefer to keep full control over my image storage backup and wouldn't trust any cloud system.

Hi & welcome to TP

I do hope that the cloud is not your only backup/storage 'location', if so IMO you need to rethink the meaning of backup ;)
