Amazon Pricing Hike

Bought a new sim free mobile phone 10 days ago from Amazon and was delighted with it compared to my old tired Iphone, pricewise I thought it was reasonable. The order for the phone was sold and dispatched by Amazon for £249.00.
After having the phone and getting used to it for the last ten days and my wife having her eyes on it:eek: I thought I would order the same phone as a birthday present for her next month. Looking on Amazon UK this morning the exact same phone sold and dispatched by Amazon has jumped up in price by almost £50.00 to £296. . Is this highway robbery or what?

So I decided to give the phone a Amazon review stating the phone/camera etc were very good also that the phone deserved 5 stars IMO yada yada yada, but as Amazon had jumped the price up by almost 50 quid in ten days I would only give the review 3 stars.

Not surprisingly I got a email from Amazon saying they couldn't post my review, there was nothing rude in the review, perhaps a sense of disappointment in the price hike.
 
We get complaints like this every time we have a sale and it ends.
- "But it was much cheaper last week!"
- "Yes, that's how sales work."
 
To be honest prices at Amazon and all retailers very. You will never know if a manufacturer has given a discount price to boost sales over a certain period etc. Like everything else you don't have to buy it at that price.

Wouldn't mind so much but there was no indication that it was a sale or Sale Price.

Am I reading this right, you gave a three star rating to a product you thought was worth five stars because the price went up? Amazing!
 
Amazon prices always jump about. Always have done.
Use camelcamelcamel to track the prices.

Thanks Tom, I'd never heard of that site which I've now signed up to.
A really helpful reply something that is rare on TP these days.

So the fantastic new phone only gets 3 stars because the price went up or the sale ended.

Seen much more peculiar reasons for bad feedback than this, saw a 1* star for a usb drive because the fool forgot the security pin number.

One question though, if you bought the same item and it went down fifty quid just after you bought it, would you give it a 5 or a 3?
 
Guess OP never heard of camelcamelcamel until now, surprised by that as that site has been around forever.

Here is a few things you have to understand about Amazon.

1 - It is not always the cheapest.
2 - Be wary of what is sold by Amazon and what is 3rd party.
3 - Amazon's prices are LIVE, they have algorithm that monitors supply and demand and adjust the prices accordingly.

With that in mind, Lighting deals, Warehouse etc are another kettle of fishes and then some, then there is black friday and how they categories "percentage off", this is where camelcamelcamel comes in handy.

People moan about Amazon but they just don't know how the game is played, everything there is VERY clear, never found it to be a problem at all.

exactly this. i wish they'd clamp down on poor product reviews because of shipping or wasnt suitable for their purpose.


amazon prices are like yoyos and these days are very rarely the best option. if you must then use the camel site to monitor and alert on desirable pricing.
 
When I was looking for a cable reel extension lead I saw a review that made me chuckle

Someone had given a 1 to the item I was interested in because the reel they got was Red instead of Blue
Apparently dislike Red so much that they tried to use it, but were so distressed they had to give it away and get a different colour

I just bought something from Amazon, £29.99 I went back to the order as I wanted to check something on the item.
Its now ( half an hour later) gone up by 10 quid!
 
I think a lot of this it perhaps due to price matching, if someone is selling something cheaper they'll try to match it, once the item is sold out or no longer available then the price will change accordingly.

About 6 weeks ago, Mrs Nod was after a pair of flip flops to replace the last pair (which cost her about 20 quid). They were up at around the 80 quid mark! Oddly, she decided that even though they're shoes, she wouldn't pay that price! When I was looking for a spare pair (same brand), I looked for her size and colourway - back down to £20. (Which reminds me, she still owes me that £20!!!)

It’s not odd, l had already said the prices are live, they are dynamic to supply and demand.

If it goes up or down, it’s your luck.

I bought some SD cards last week, 4 days later it’s £3 cheaper, it’s just the way it is.
 
Moulded rather than stamped out of sheets. Remarkably comfortable! (I was surprised myself when I tried them on.)

£29.99 was reasonable but at £39.99 there are other sellers and options cheaper.

On the subject of things people may not know about Amazon.......do we all know about https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ ? Go there and pick your favourite charity (and if it's not there then tell the charity to apply - it's actually pretty easy). Stuff costs you the same, it arrives the same and it is the same. But your chosen charity gets a (pretty small) percentage of everything you spend.

If you shop at Amazon, I can't think of a good reason for not shopping at Smile instead.
 
I've been using smile. It's a great idea and with the extent of purchases good to know that some of it goes to charity.

And with miminal input from my end as I was buying the item anyway....

A good review IMO takes into the account the price paid for it (if relevant). I've seen reviews on Amazon that state how much the reviewer bought it for and whether they thought it was good VFM. It annoys me greatly when I read reviews that disparage an item even though they've never used it (or equally badly "looks good, yet to try it out"). Give me a reasonable opinion of the item. Tell me what you like about it and what you dislike or hate about it. Allow me to gain a feel for the item so I can judge whether it's worth buying or not. If you want to mention the price (or the hike), add it to your review.

Otherwise your review is essentially useless.

Went Smiley a while back in favour of Cancer Research UK. Not sure what percentage gets to them but even 0.01% is better than 0% and every little helps.
