Just got a message off Amazon, saying a package has been left for us. They left it in a secure area, as it was too big to post through letterbox.

The big box contained that tiny little box on the left, and the packaging on the right. The little item would have easily gone in a padded envelope, and would have easily gone through the letterbox. The item was not fragile, so did not need all that protection.

It's probably in a glass bottle which seems to be considered fragile in all its forms. Not sure what a white square with black corners means in terms of warning codes - possibly simply glass. At least most Amazon packaging/padding is recyclable these days.

It's Hazmat (giant sticker on the top, flammable) and a glass container, yes it's only a small container and very strong but that's still enough for Amazon to box it rather than jiffy it. Loads of couriers won't even deliver such a product because of those two factors.

I once got a fish tank scraper (imagine a 6cm wide credit card stuck to a thin metal rod about 40cm long) and it came in a full cardboard setup similar to what you have pictured. Completely ridiculous. Only saving grace is that it could all be recycled. Seems like a massive waste of resources though.

It is only a tiny bottle of fluid, it would have been safe enough in a strong envelope. So much packaging for a tiny item. I make sure I always recycle packaging.

Apart from recycling, I usually keep a few Amazon boxes & packaging handy; they are useful for sending parcels to family members at Christmas and for Birthdays.

My granddaughter loves jumping in the strips of polythene 'air bags' & making them go 'pop'.

There is a joke going around, about the air inside those plastic bubbles.

I remember reading somewhere, that Amazon was working on a cardboard box maker, that would fit each item precisely. Long overdue.

It might be safe enough in a strong envelope if it's with other similar items, but unfortunately as it's around an inch thick it's classed as a parcel which means it's handled in the same way as anything up to 2kg in the small parcel section, or up to 20kg if it's handled as a priority item and as it's hazmat it has to have enough packaging to survive an impact from a parcel which could potentially have a few books in. I've seen it at post office counters where one person drops off a small box ~100g 1st class parcel, label on then in the post bag, the next customer drops off a 1.5kg box of goodies going to a student away from home and it gets dropped in the same bag on top of the first parcel.

It's hazmat (flammable if broken) so it gets boxed.

The label is for Hazardous Goods in Limited Quantities, and as such, the contents cannot bet sent in anything less robust than a cardboard box.
Also, because the label cannot bend around any corner of the packaging, that box is the smallest box in which this could be packed.

I'm not saying people don't send such items in jiffy bags, but in this case Amazon are simply complying with DG regulations.

Made the mistake of ordering a heavy duty extra large leaf rake from Amazon .... came fully enclosed in a cardboard box!!!! o_O

Anti theft measure ........... ?? Very hard for warehouse staff to conceal a large box on their person.

Pretty hard to conceal an extra-large rake!!!

We have still got some of the larger Amazon delivery boxes, I use them as storage boxes. :)

Maisie (cat) used to love the paper packing and the larger boxes.
