been hearing a lot about these amazon etc sticks that you use to get your t.v of late ,can someone please explain whats actually available ,what they cost ,what they do ,and if its a one off payment or a monthly top up etc ,also do you need a smart t.v .we currently have sky multi room and its obviously getting more and more expensive .so looking at a way to reduce the bill .
we have a very efficient broadband connection already if that helps .
 
I'm assuming hopefully you mean the Amazon firestick?
I have one, it cost £35.. You get Netflix demand 5 iplayer.
I have amazon prime subscription so I pay £79 I think it is for the year so that includes prime TV, not sure how much prime TV is as standalone.

Downside for me is the firestick doesn't have itv player or 4Od or nowtv which I want for more choice since I got rid of sky

I don't have a smart TV, you just need hdmi port

Probably best putting this in the technology forum.

Some multi room customers are paying less by upgrading to Sky Q.
 
The features on a firestick are often available on many smart bluray players. I got a sony one and that has amazon, netflix and demand 5.

Amazon prime included content is poor. A lot of it is paid for on top so when you actually go and look what there is available having previously thought you'd get access to loads of stuff you find it's basically what they've made. Amazon prime subscription doesn't really include much.

If you want more content then netflix is far, far better. It's all included.

A lot of freeview recorders have access to the smart players, usually netflix or amazon. Finding netflix, amazon and nowtv seems to be tricky along with all the on demand players.

If you want multiple people to be able to stream HD content at the same time then you will need a very good internet connection...

To be fair I'd have to agree with the prime TV content, there is an awful lot that's not covered and we tend to automatically go straight to Netflix.
I didn't know bluray players had other content, that's interesting and definitely worth people looking into.
 
We have got Prime amazon with the box for films etc and some of the stuff is ok, but its quite surprising to see how many 1 star programmes have been made, and having watched a few mins of some of them I agree with the reviews.
 
If you have a good internet connection then these devices are fantastic and could easily spell the death of ludicrous expensive stuff like Sky.

You may not want to splash out again, but I've got the google Chromecast and that does both 4OD and nowtv, not sure about ITV player. BBC iplayer is in. I think you get 2 months free sky movies with the chromecast. Think it's £35 or so no subscription and really easy to use \ move to different TVs.

Funnily enough I do have the chromecast already, got the firestick because I thought it would be better and also so the kids didn't keep nicking my phone..
I was going to try running the 2 together but I'm not sure if you can
 
I haven't tried it, but I think the Amazon TV version (opposed to the stick) is also a pretty cool Android Games Console....Mine Craft on the big screen telly :)

I looked at some of the options, but for the stuff I want, the only place I could get it was Sky.

Not a grey area at all.
That film has been released by the studio and by distributors only for cinema release at this point.

The official TP stance on that is its OK to mention it in passing, but not to describe how to use or hack stuff with it ;)

LOL Is that grey as in I justify it to myself? Surely a light bulb should go on that something is not quite right when you can watch the latest cinema releases etc for nothing?
 
Regarding the grey area comment. i think the issue is that with torrents the prosecutions were for distribution of copyrighted material which is exactly what you've done while file sharing. Streaming is a whole different issue and opens a whole can of worms regarding major streaming sites like youtube and the like. Millions of people every day upload there favourite songs there favourite movie clips etc to youtube without copyright holders permission. Should we all be getting arrested for watching a funny vintage only fools and horses clip being past around on social media? Its a difficult situation and Dutch courts have referred several streaming related questions to the EU Court of Justice last October looking for some answers.

You seriously think that it is perfectly legal to watch a copy of a blockbuster movie for nada nothing online whilst still in the cinema? Basically its life + 70 years...Or when published its 70 years after release, or when broadcast its first broadcast date + 50 years....Two weeks after release whilst still in the cinema surely shouldn't really need any explanation...

I accept that one can disagree with it, and that one could argue that it shouldn't be so....But come on, when you know there has been a £100M investment in a blockbuster movie it really shouldn't be a surprise that watching for free is not what the copyright holder had intended....

Where have said that any of that? I was just trying to explain where the grey area comment comes from. I'm neither condoning it or saying its legal.

Whoever uploaded the content is most definitely breaking copyright laws but is streaming it? I guess they could argue by streaming it its been on your memory momentarily so you have made a copy of it?

Hi Jeff

If you haven't anything else to play stuff on, then for £35 the fire stick works well and are easily moveable - just plug into HDMI slot and away you go - we have one and it's great for moving between the kitchen and bedroom TV as it literally just plugs into the back of the TV, so no worries about where to put a box etc...

If you go for Amazon Prime as well - £79 per year or I think you can pay monthly (and cheaper if you have a student in the house) then you can access the Prime video as well - just be careful about it though as they can remove stuff without you knowing - nearly caught us out as my daughter got into watching Criminal minds and after several weeks, one day not on prime anymore - you had to pay !!!

Well to be fair, I'm far from holy besides that place at the bottom of my back. I've have no particular issue with it; but at least just be honest about what "you" do opposed to justifying it via far fetched technicalities.

When man enough to do it, then also be man enough to see it for what it is.

Anyway unless hacking the stick it won't matter. I like Amazon prime movies.
 
Do you have access to the same things through the stick as you do streaming it through something like the Xbox
 
It's just a android OS so you can do much the same stuff as your phone or tablet.
