All I wanted was a simple plastic kitchen roll holder, the kind that looks like an oversized toilet roll and can be screwed to the wall.

Nothing easier I thought - but I was wrong!

Not a single shop in Corby stocked one - Oh I could have got a trendy stainless steel one from Argos for about £18.00 or a stand flat one for about the same from Wilco and the same from another shop but not a single simple plastic kitchen roll holder.

And have you ever tried to use the "touch screen" monitors in Argos? - You have to virtually dislocate a finger before they work!

After about an hour of traipsing around I came back home and later had a look on Amazon - and lo and behold there was exactly what I wanted - for £3.70!

And it arrived today - well packaged and far cheaper than anything I had looked at - a cream kitchen roll holder for wall mounting and really solid.

Thank god for Amazon!

Corby's too busy still marketing the trouser press

The home bargains, b & m bargains and pound shops are good places to look for things like that. They generally have sensible utilitarian stuff. I'd still just look on amazon first and not even bother with going out!

I had a similar issue with the plastic holder of a toilet roll holder. The spring had gone so needed replacing. All new toilet roll holders seemed to be a single arm maybe on a hinge, but none with a springer column but. eBay rescued me.

I don't 'do' this sort of shopping if I can possibly avoid it. Amazon - and other online retailers - takes most of the pain out of it...

Peter, you're forgetting the one question that has us all on the edges of our seats . . . now that you've installed it, does the kitchen roll hang over or under?

OMG always under but my sisters both do it the other way and go potty if I ever install a new toilet roll under :D

Nope none of them had it - I only went out to get my weekly half-shopping.
