Hi all,
So I went to sign in to my Amazon account the other day and got a message saying there is no account for that email address, after numerous attempts to log in I gave up and thought I'd try to log in on my phone, when I brought up the log-in box there was a strange email address already in the box !
Rang Amazon and they said my email address did not exist on their system !! So I said I have emails from them to me at my email address!
She was no help at all , just kept saying thet my email did not exist - asked to speak to a manager who was quite abrupt and told me they will look into it and get back to me - but as yet I have heard nothing
Also I have my credit card on that account which I obviously cancelled immediately, this also causes problems to me as I use the card almost daily
Rubbish service from Amazon !
How does this happen? Done a search and I'm not the only one by far this has happened to
Hopefully nothing has been charged to my card, no purchases on my online statement
Amazon is now dead to me!
Anyone had similar or any advice- its shaken my confidence for buying stuff online and certainly for leaving credit cards on file.

either someone brute forced your password (if its something easy like a dictionary word with numbers etc) or they got it from another breached site and your password is the same.

they most likely signed in and changed your logon email and password.

moving forward, enable 2 form auth.

Thanks Neil, what annoys me more is the fact that my account no longer exists so anything I bought from Amazon has nowhere to go if I have a problem!
Also no contact from Amazon

Steve - i would send a mail to the UK chief exec - dgurr@amazon.com
I had an account problem sometime ago and mailed the chief exec and got a decent resolution by going that route.
Regarding the frosty reception, that is reasonable as from Amazons perspective your conversation would sound very much like somebody trying to access an account that wasn’t theirs, so it is right that amazon are cautious on these things.

PS, it may be worth looking at using two factor authentication on 'important' accounts. This would probably have stopped the hack.

Well thanks to this thread I've just enabled 2FA on my Amazon account - many thanks for prodding me into action.

I use 2FA on other accounts but didn't realise that Amazon offered this facility - thank you.

FWIW I use my password manager (1Password) to generate the extra 2FA one-time codes for logging in to my Amazon account, and it's much more convenient than using my phone (which is still a simple and reasonably convenient method).

Now when I log into Amazon, I simply type 'cmd-\' to let 1Password enter my email & password, then 'cmd-v' to paste the one-time code, which 1Password automatically generates and temporarily copies to the clipboard. It's quick, simple and awesome!

Undoubtedly other apps offer this convenience, I strongly recommend others look into them.

Right, I'm off to convert my other 2FA accounts to use 1Password rather than my phone..... :)

2 factor for amazon, eBay, PayPal anything that involves money or site that offers it. Is it 100% safe, hell no, nothing online is 100% secure. But it's the best we have. Also use strange email alias not your name. So gtyru345sg@gmail.com is almost impossible to guess or social engineer.

Thanks for all the replies folks- going forward do you think Amazon can re-instate my account or has it gone forever?

I guess they could, it ought to be a as simple as looking up your old email address, whether they can be bothered though is a different matter. I have found complaining on twitter and facebook, making sure you tag the company you are complaining about is quite effective, they have teams of people monitoring social media and trying to resolve complains quickly.

Thanks so much for that ! I emailed that address and they got back to me and re-set my account and I'm back in!!
Another successful outcome due to the great advice always available on here!
I have set up 2fa on all my sites that involve money also
Thanks again
