Could kick myself really , just watched a u.tube video of a guy explaining how to calibrate your lenses on Nikon dslr bodies , back in pre.mirrorless days I used to do this frequently both for myself and for a host of friends and contacts ..
But for the last seven years with mirrorless I haven’t needed to calibrate anything and the memory had been lost . I was in fact looking at the results from my recent dslr purchase the Nikon d500 coupled to a Tamron 70-300 VC compared to a Nikon 24-120 and said to my son how soft the Tamron is .. I will be getting all my gear out tomorrow and having a fine tune couple of hours .. update after it’s done

AF fine tune is one of the first things I do whenever I get a new lens - I have a D780 and had D810/D750/D610 & D600 before that.

The problem I find using Nikon's in-built calibration is that you only get to set an adjustment at one point in the focal range of the lens (the D780 gives you two points; one at either end of the focal range but that's still too basic). One way around that is to use a newer Sigma Contemporary or Sport lens and their dock, giving 16 adjustment points which are stored in and applied by the lens as you change the focal length. I believe Tamron have a similar system. Much better (y)

I’m quite adept at doing it manually Steve but not sure I can on the D500 ,pulled out my focus checker gear this morning and there is minimal adjustment needed on the zoom lens , got a 300 f4 PF arriving later in the week so we shall have wait for that
