Am I wrong to just use DPP?

Yes
There doesn’t seem to be much talk on here about Canon’s DPP software, but its pretty much all I use for processing images, with the occasional recourse to Irfan to add borders. I appreciate that it’s a tad basic, and really just corrects mistakes that I made in camera, but am I really missing out by not using Photoshop or Lightroom or something? I’ve tried Picasa and an old version of Elements but found it super hardwork without instructions.

I know that most people use Photoshop, and I guess that kind of answers my own question – yes I ought to get off my arse and get to grips with Photoshop - but is it really necessary for a casual photographer?

Does anybody else just use DPP like me….?

I use Lightroom, which has a slightly bigger feature set than DPP, but does essentially the same thing.

If you are happy with the results why change? (Plus you can get a pretty decent lens for the price of photoshop)

Are you happy with the level of processing your software allows and it's ability to deliver images that make you happy?

If yes, then stick with what you know.....it's obviously working for you.

If no, it's time to empty your wallet and bring in another software package.

to be honest, post processing is unrequired, but with digital cameras it's handy to sort out WB issues, crop, and set some levels, sharpening and all the other bits and pieces.
DPP does most of this.
is the results that's important. not the process.
i use irfanview for loads of bits and pieces, after the jpg quality has been hiked up to 95%.
I intend to learn more about lightroom as I've heard great things, but I'm in no great rush myself

DPP is the best raw converter of canon files by far, if you want to do digital manipulation then is photoshop.

I really only use photoshop for adding borders, otherwise is DPP all the way. For pure photography the only thing missing in DPP is a more refined rotate tool for when those horizons are just a little out..

Adobe do not rule the digital world , don't spend money just because everyone else has.

Also worth noting that Lightroom does not get anywhere near the best out of 50D files and leaves them 'grainy' and noisier in comparison to DPP.

I've uploaded the latest versions of all the canon software, but can't really get to grips with DPP. I use photoshop CS1 to do the post processing of Jpegs, but for raw conversion I use Phase One's Capture One LE, which I got free with Sandisk, very easy to use and is said to out perform photoshop for its RAW conversion capabilities.
