i have 4 o levels, 3 grade b+ and 1 grade c+. i have an IQ of 128, i can build pc's from the ground up, i help lots of people with new gadgets, phones, mp3's etc, but i cant bloody get to grips with photoshop!.
 
PS can be a bit daunting mate but you gotta tame it :bat:

If you get your hands over "How to do everything with PS CS" by colin smith I am sure you will be up and running with PS in no time.

Now chin up and go buy that book ;)
 
It is a huge programme and tbh most of us will never use half of it. Take your time and I'll add the Scott Kelby books to recommended reading, lots of very useful tips and tutorials.
 
if you do an on0line search you'll find a wealth of resources for video tutorials. They're free and will expalin how to do a few tasks. Once you know there's nothing to fear and have spent a few weekends practicing, you'll be off and running.

As already said, it takes time. Lots of it!!!!!!! ;)
 
nelly - 2 things - buy the photographic mags and follow their tutorials. I am sure everyone here has their favs, but for ps lessons mine is Digital Photo. Also, there are loads of on line tutorials but my fav is actually a very simple site, where she uses no techno mumble jumble, and thats myjannee.com. Not specifically photographic and terribly simple but does help you learn the different things ps can do and help you start experimenting with your own ideas.

If its any comsolation I have been trying to teach myself that damn program for 4 years, and still feel I only know a fraction of what its capable of, then, just as I start getting my head round it, they release another version!!

Yes *runs* ;) Give it time mate. I've been using it for 7 years or so and I'm still learning new things.

thanks for the positive input guys, i am only using picasa2 at the moment so a lot of my photos are hardly touched (a good thing?). Neil
 
Hi Neil,

No, it isn't just you. I, like you, have experience of working with building computers, working with operating systems and software packages and Photoshop was completely alien to me at first. There is nothing intuitive about it, and everything is backwards as far as tool controls from Paint Shop Pro, which is where I started.

It wasn't until I needed the advanced functionality of PS that I eventually forced myself to learn how to use it. Begrudgingly, and grumbling at every stupid needlessly complicated step. Adobe aren't the best at producing user friendly software, Acrobat is a steaming heap of ..., but one can't dispute the power of the software when you do eventually get to grips with it.

Top tip - get your head round using Layers first, and the rest falls into place.
 
As noted above PS is a massive program. Start slowly. I started with a few photo mags and followed the tutorials. This gave me enough to try a few of my own images and I really started to learn pretty quickly.

The levels, hugh saturation, layers blending modes and layer masks were my main starting areas. Scott elby is the King of Photoshop and his books are very easy to follow. I'm sure many here will give the thmbs up to Scott's excellent books. The Photoshop CS2 book for Digital Photographers really is a great help in showing you how you can edit your images.

Tutorials online are also very good.

It does however take time to learn. It's a huge program with many ways of doing the same things like sharpening - ust be half a dozen ways to sharpen your images - maybe more!!

Take your time, read and watch tutorials and it'll slowly start to take shape. One day it'll all click into place..... That's what happened to me. I'm certainly no master but I am able to use most functions.

I think you may need to try MSpaint ;)
 
Dunno which version you're using but Photoshop CS2 for Dummies is a good starting point, and Scott Kelby's books are ace!

If you have iTunes you can subscribe to the Photoshop TV podcast too :D
 
I got started with the CD's that come with most photo mags... they always have tutorials
+ Martin Evenings book
+ lots of patience.
