Who just can't get my head around photoshop, i think i have straightened buildings up and i haven't i'm so frustrated with it, but i have found something called Picnik through flickr that i seem to be having success with, does anybody else use this, and what are your impressions

No good at it myself. I use gimp and even then mostly auto tools. Having said that, I have not taken a pic I am proud enough of, to really work on.

Hi. There are plenty of photoshop tutorials on the web, plenty of magazines in WHSmith with work-along files, adult ed courses so really you just need to knuckle down. Its not that hard, just something else to learn!

No...you're not the only one. It can be rather overwhelming at first, because there seems to be an endless number of manipulations one might use. Over time, though, you find that there are really only a few basic things that can be done...with hundreds of variations. Once you know how to do the basics, though, PS really opens up possibilities for your creativity.

Of course (and this is critical) you have to actually like sitting in front of the computer manipulating your photos! If that's not your cup of tea, PS will forever irritate you, I suspect. LOL

The russell brown ones are good ..It does take time I have been dabbling for over a year and still learning ..there is a few items on the tutorials on this forum thet are real good ..thats how I started just got to keep practising.

No I have trouble as well but I think I will be looking at those Russell Brown ones - they look pretty good.
I tend to come across a problem and then see if I can find a tutorial for what I need to do - have had limited success so far.

The Russel Brown ones are good but would be better if you could listen to them without the sound !!!

Liz, Photoshop does take work to learn but as you have it, and if you are going to do much manipulation over your photographic future it is well worth it. I have invested hours and hours (weeks, months even) in learning how to use it and still probably only use a fraction of its capabilities. There are lots of tutorials on the web and a lot of knowledge in this forum if you want to post a picture and ask for help in editing it - you might get a lot of different responses as there are many ways of doing things but can pick the ones that suit you. For instance have you looked at the photo editing game ? :D

Hi Liz

I only have PSE8 & struggle with it , very slow learner I am

I also use Picnik & find it much more user friendly , only have the free version at the moment & obviously doesn't have all the features of Photoshop but does most stuff I need

HTH

Horses for courses, basic stuff can be done in Picnik but if you want to manipulate millions of pixels in millions of individual ways then PS is your tool of choice. Unfortunately a lot of people forget that PS is an extremely powerful high end professional program which has its own courses and exams to certify that you can use it to the required standard if you work in that particular industry.

I have invested hours and hours (weeks, months even) in learning how to use it and still probably only use a fraction of its capabilities.

Same story here, been using it for about 7 years and still only know about a 10th of what it can do.

My advice is either:

1) Learn the basics - layers, masks, correcting distortion / over and under exposure, saturation etc.

or

2) Decide what the problem is with the photo and learn how to correct as you go along (ideal if you make the same mistakes ie wonky horizons - google correcting wonky horizons in PS. It'll throw up masses of tutorials each telling you how to do it a different way but ending up with the same result.

Other than practice, practice, practice it's really the only advice i can offer you.
