Am I the only one who gets frustrated at the misuse of the word 'YOUR' in web forums?

Maybe I'm turning into a grumpy old man, but it appears to be more and more common to see the word 'your' used in place of 'you're'. Or is it that I am starting to look for it? Has anybody else noticed it or am I alone on this one?

I'm glad that 'yore' and 'yaw' aren't commonly used or we would never understand what anybody is talking about.

I'm glad I got that off my chest :bang:

Me too, and there's loads of incorrect spellings seen so often on forums that are not right, but at the end of the day... they're just spelling mistakes, that's all, and they are not going to hurt anyone, and... there's nowt that you can really do about it to be honest.

There's many different reasons for it; some people are simply poor spellers, some people are down right lazy, some unfortunately have dyslexia, some are young and are yet to learn, some are older and should know better, some have poor sight... but the important thing to remember is that each will have their own reasons for writing in the style and using the spelling they choose to post in.

OK, it frustrates you when you see it - and sure, it frustrates me too - but it's good to have variety and we are all different, and it's good to have tolerance and understanding.

Good post, if everyone were to read that this whole hangup about spelling on forums might be laid to rest.

Spelling and grammar doesn't bother me too much but what does tick me off (apart from text speak :D) is when people type using 'local' dialects and accents in forums or e-mail.

:runaway:

Guilty I am.

And I'm not going to make any excuses for myself either ...I like my son have mild Dyspraxia, (Has absolutely nothing to do with dyslexia) but, at 45 years old, I should by now have learnt how to spell correctly I feel. :gag:

However I do still struggle.

Thought this might be interesting to yous all, lol.

...As someone with a son diagnosed with Dyspraxia I learnt why I had such problem in my schooling.

And I believe my inherent panic memories from my 'clumsy oaf' childhood still interferers with my ability to 'getting it right' today. ...stupid and daft as that is.

Basically for me and my son, Dyspraxia means our brains fine motor control section stresses out big time with small complicated tasks ...especially things like controlling a pencil making letters. This means we're burning ten times the mental energy trying to complete the same task many of you take for granted...is exhausting our minds....so we fall behind with studies. and the more we try and catch up the harder it becomes.

Don't get me wrong, my son and I don't consider ourselves disabled in any small faction. (I am a professional bike mechanic after all)

Really I'm just getting my poor spelling and grammar of my chest as I kind of appology, because I really hate it too ... but I don't feel I should apologise really, getting a bit bored of it and is not as if I don't try....and by the looks of the numbers I may be speaking on behalf of many members here.

It does seem to be more of a boy thing too.

Dyspraxia... A typical boys story.

That could be so written about me! ...:gag:

It frustrates me, but it isn't going to harm anyone and as I said above... tolerance is a good quality to have. Nice one Hacker...

What does bother me though, and greatly too, is when people post with downright rudeness and arrogance along the lines of... "I know better..." or... "this is the way to do it..." - when photography - per sé - is so subjective.

Guilty I am.

 To be honest I like to think its all so obvious to most members ...they'll all see straight through it to its other lesser and rather pointless point.

your/you're
their/they're/there
bought/brought
meh

annoys the hell out of me. Especially people saying 'brought' when they mean 'bought'. I nearly came to blows with my son over this the other day - and he's 26!

I do feel tempted to point out the error of their ways in-thread but manage to resist, restricting my rants for threads like this. Thanks OP ;)

:agree: 100% Excellent post Musicman :)

your/you're

there/their/they're

I notice it a lot and it does get frustrating after a while. but I've learned to accept that I must just be perfect :D

Nah, ive just got used to it really, ive been on another forum for years and the mistakes on there are a lot more frequent.

Have you ever looked closely at the OOF details?
Out of Focus Totally unrelated off topic type stuff, jokes, rants, raves..anything at all thats nothing to do with photography, but please, no politics or religion, and absolutely no discussions about spelling and grammar!

Who cares? ...

To be honest, most of us have more important things to worry about.

Obviously some of us do care. A don't care attitude is the main reason for the decline in standards.

Steve.

sorry but you will be hard pushed to find a whole paragraph spelt right by me. no matter how many times i am told which way round ie or ei, no matter how many times i am told which word when more than one sounds the same.. and for some inexpliciple reason i keep typing eh instead of he in full words.. and you can tell me today if etc or ect is right and it wont make any difference an hr later..

But in over 20 yrs on the internet not one single person has refused my advice on computer programming or in recent yrs photography because i ddint spell it right.. my info (wehn right :) ) has been good enough no matter how its spelt. I know 15 different programing/scripting languages that depend on exact syntax yet i cant master the queens english.

anyone wants to moan about my spelling will gte nothing but laughed at for being small minded not to mention sad and pathetic

my spelling stays as it is.. viva la bad spelling or wahtever.. and if anyone doesnt like it... tuff titty :)

there.. i feel betetr now:)

seriously guys.. if you worry about other peoples spelling on a forum then you really need to get out more :)

Steve.

Sorrry, im with Kev, pointless thread.

I'm waiting with baited breath for someone to tow the line in this thread. I guess I should of read it all first, but I could care less about spelling. It's misused cliches that get on my goat

:D

I went to a grammar school and was taught how to spell, how to punctuate and how to use correct grammar.

I'm 34 now so school was a long time ago. I know the difference between your and you're, to, too and two, there and their, were, where and wear etc etc. I try to use the right ones but if I get it wrong, deal with it. I'm sure you'll still find a way to get through the day.

Spell checkers were invented for a reason. There is also a reason why forums don't have automatic spell checkers.

Like using the illogical, American I could care less instead of the logical I couldn't care less?

Steve.

You spotted that my whole post was somewhat tongue in cheek, presumably?

Baited breath?
Tow the line?
Should of?
Get on my goat?
Could care less?

No. Just picked up on my 'favourite' illogical Americanism! I should have (or is that should of?) read it a few more times. I'm tempted to write my bad here but that would just be ridiculous!

Steve.

A lot of peoples posts (certainly the daytime people) are typed quickly while doing their day job. I know my evening posts are better, purely because the Mac spell checks everything for me, but I'm stuck with windows at work, and don't have time to copy/paste everything into word to spell check it before posting.
Clumsy fingers (or tryping errors, as my old boss used to call them) are probably as much to blame as a lack of spelling ability!

Aha! That's why the cameras slid off those shelves you offered to put up when I wouldn't! :p

I confess to starting a thread on that one a little while back :exit:

Sorry! I didn't mean to cause any upset. It really was only the word 'your' that frustrated me. I often make mistakes with my spelling if I dont use a spell check. I guess it's best left at that.

Thanks for your comments!

Gordon

I am a rubbish typist, so I try to remember that when I see spelling mistakes, although when someone posts their website and it is stuffed full of grammar and spelling errors what is the etiquette? Do you tell them?
Meanwhile, I remain glad everything hasn't yet degenerated into text speak

L

A website is a different kettle of fish and should ahve the right spelling.. if it doesnt then tell them.. I would hope someone tells me ... webiste/forum total different..

On a forum I take the stance that.. "if you understand what I wrote".. ...thats it :)

Spell checkers were invented for a reason. There is also a reason why forums don't have automatic spell checkers.

Spell checkers will not detect the incorrect use of lose/loose. their/there and all the other common misuses of words.

Whilst there are times when I'd happily squeeze somebody by the throat and point out the difference between loose and lose, your and you're etc, I don't. It's not worth the aggravation, particularly as those who object the loudest are frequently the most guilty, yet they offer worthwhile contributions, and it doesn't mean they are a lesser person on this particular forum.

However, I do refuse to buy from web sites littered with spelling and grammatical errors. I will not trust a company who cannot be bothered to put some effort in and get the basics right. Some time ago I said this to Park Cameras after receiving several emails containing many mistakes. They got on to it quickly and since then every one has been mistake free (that I've noticed).

Whilst I have your attention - the Americanisms "wanna" and "gonna" creeping in here are likely to attract some attention in the future.
