Am I the only one who can't fold a 5in1 reflector?

No
Bought it today, and now I can't get it back in it's bag!

Hopefully google to the rescue

I have this problem. I can actually do it but I couldn't tell you how, I hold it one hand each side and twist them in different directions to form a figure of eight but then it either goes together or not. I have had times where I just couldn't do it so I leave it and try again later. Doesn't help when you're out and about though.

Twist into a figure 8, twist again (mine needs 2 twists to get down to the size of the bag) and fold the 2 (or 3) 'sections' ontop of each other

It's all in the thumbs.

Hold it at either side, as far apart as possible.
Have one thumb on top and the twist the other hand so the thumb is underneath.
Now twist your hands and bring them together.

Either it's folded nicely or you need a doctor. :D

No, they are impossible, they just spring out and you end up having a wresting match trying to get them folded - I just end up dumping them behind the sofa in all their glory!

Well you think that is difficult, try folding a "foldable" beach shelter on a windy crowded beach in front of hundreds of beach sun bathers!!

You need at least a 2.1 in Physics, a 2.2 simply isn't good enough...

I've got no chance, I had to make a video short showing how it was done but couldn't show the model.
Eventually she managed to work it out for herself but wasn't strong enough - thank God for editing!

It's all in the wrist action ....

or am I thinking of 'self abuse', no, keep practising and after a couple of visits to A&E, you'll soon have the knack.

It's a bit similar to the till in Open all Hours - you've got to do it, but dread the struggle.

Good luck.

you ought to try it with a bigger thing like the lastolite collapsable backgrounds!

I can relate to that - I have a big wire framed background and it takes forever to get back in the bag.

I resorted to Youtube to figure it out eventually.

YES... success, took me 3 you-tube videos and I've done it like 3 or 4 times.

I found fold it in to figure of 8, then give it another push on one of the 8s and it kind of folds in and you can adjust it all.

I also managed to do the behind the back one in this video!

When I shot weddings it was always a source of amusement to give the reflector to a guest to fold up and put back in the bag. The best one was the 6'x4' panelite. :D

I bought mine on ebay without instructions, so it took me a while to put it back in its bag. fortunatelly its the same principle as the pop-up tents. having mastered the latter I can do the reflector now. it is best done without thinking, if I stoped to think how I do it, my hands would get confused immediately :)

It's best to practice giving a cat a bath first, after that it's easy :)

There is a knack to it, once you have it, your sorted!. One of our guys, 6 foot 6, 300 lbs an ex-aircraft engineer with a couple of degrees just cannot fold them up, while one of the girl assistants 5 foot nothing, about 60lbs and to be honest as thick as ****** can do it every time easy peasy. And thats the lasolite background! Wayne

Thanks for that, makes it look so simple!

As already said by someone, there is a knack to it marc. I found it easy once i'd figured that not only did it have to collapse into a figure of eight but each "half" of the eight also had to fold into the other.

I don't have any problems folding mine. Opening it for the first time was "interesting" though

I watched a guy I work with open a lastolite background in a customers house for the first time and take out a picture hanging on the wall. lol. Strangly the customer didn't find it as funny as I did. Wayne

never had a problem with the reflector, always managed to do it easily. i got it the same time i got one of them lastolite backgrounds, couldnt fold that back up so sent it back.

lol, knew someone would say that:lol:

no. managed to get it folded again between me and the missus, half a bottle of vodka and 2 hours(roughly)
