Have had dog slow (0.13 meg) internet for 2 days, doing my noggin in, so Bt, came today and spent a couple of hours playing with their toy, when he left , he said I have 3.6 at the socket, ive checked the router, and that says 3.6 download speed, yet it is still painfully slow, and speedtest .net still says 0.13
any idea's?

My first reaction would say that its your computer at fault however from past experiences engineers say whatever they can to get away from a job they can't figure out.

Do virus/spyware scans and see if that helps.
 
And to rule out any software problems, consider using a Linux LiveCD (Ubuntu / Knoppix / etc), connect to the internet and google for and run one of the many online speed tests.
 
its the same result on 3 machines 2 pc and a mac, he did say it might take a couple of days to speed up, but that sounds a bit Bs'y
 
You could contact your ISP and have them check if everything is fine on their end regarding your connection - perhaps they've put a limit on some IP ranges and accidentally put it on a range too many.
 
ill try that, ta, that sort of goes with something else he said, that the systewm will limit the speed, to keep it stable, and that it gets higher as it allows more BW.
 
Are you wireless or wired? I suspect the engineer either updated the socket or put a filter unit in. This does take a while to optimise.

Try connecting via a network cable from the router and see if that helps. I'd use the Mac as it's easier to configure quickly from wireless to Ethernet via the network prefs option. See if this speed things up.

The other thing is to see what protocol each computer is running, especially if it's wireless. The system will slow down to match the slowest connection

if they are resyncing the line it can take several days to figure out the max supported speed your line will take.

make sure your router isnt near any fridges, power transformer blocks or other sources of interferance also.
 
If you've done a speedtest and it says 3.6 Megabits then it isn't the line.

Curious as to what your pings are? Open your command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and type in 'ping google.co.uk'. Let me know the results.

EDIT: Misread your original post. You're getting 0.13 on your speedtest. BT's problem, not yours. Do a tracert instead of a ping and post up the results.
 
I've had similair issue with BT. Nothing but problems. I can't even stream a video from youtube for more than 6 seconds wirlessly before my wirless cuts off plus websites take a day in age to load. (Tried different channels etc).

I went down the new Home Hub option but it still does the same thing for me. Suggest it to BT though as it may work?

had the same prob - only getting 0.6 MB ! - 3miles to farm from BT Exchange

told PlusNet.....they did something [?]
then told me to leave the PC "ON" for 72 hours for my router to synch [?]

PC can be used just dont turn OFF.......seemed to work !
now 1.3MB which is max around here - !
 
nope mine is doing my head in at the moment!!! glad to know thats its not just me then!!! ive got bt tooo!!!! giving up and going to my partners this eve to work!!! cant cope!!!
