I couldn't resist buying a flash gun... bouncing light I'm going to play with, diffusing light I'm going to play with (assuming diffusing light is good for portraits?) but I'm a bit of a lighting noob - ok, not a complete noob but noob enough...

Can anyone recommend a good book on flash lighting please?

is that to "am I mad?" or "can anyone recommend a book?" lol

I covered lighting a bit years ago in performing arts stage work and a little trial and error (and obv reading - usually mags) on photographic lighting, but thought I could do with reading a half decent book or summit

Are you mad for buying a flash gun? Bonkers, mate.

Yes you are And Yes someone can...

No. Good on you! :)

Have a look at Strobist.com for all things fun with flash too.

thanks

I can't read strobist though - I can't read white on black :(

I don't know which browser you're using, but if it's Firefox you can use this addon to invert the colour scheme - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10403
If you are using Firefox and don't want to use the addon, try selecting 'No style' from the View menu - it should then display black text on a white background, although the formatting will be different.

I think you can do the same sort of thing through Tools>Internet Options>General in Internet Explorer.

You're welcome. Glad if it's helped.

Anyway, take your time working your way through the Strobist site. One light's a good way to start off and you'll find there's tons you can do with it. But remember to enjoy it too!

The Hot Shoe Diaries
By Joe McNally
Although he only uses Nikons it would apply to all flash users.
and its not really a manual but a book about his experiance with flash and the problems he comes across and how to deal with them.
Its very funny and a good read, very inspiring, makes difficult things sound a lot easier and not to much technical jargon.

I to am just a learner with the flash.

Thanks Edd, will check that one out too

You know, it's really hard to find any togger books in the library of any worth, including research, considering all the amatures ATM I would have thought that there'd be loads of books! I've been quite disappointed TBH

Maybe see if you can get something by an inter-library loan? Then you're not limited to only what your local library has got.

Check out the Libraries website and see what they can get.
You think you have it bad with only 20 come up here and you could
read both !! but they can get quite a few from other libraries and fairly quickly. I expect you could do it all from home as well.

possibly, although I was quite lucky yesterday, I went in to my local library and found a book on portraiture and lighting, so I was quite impressed. It's actually a really good book and I'm thinking of buying a copy. I got a bargain of the library too, my husband has been wanting to learn Japanese for awhile now, and there was the Japanese course, you know the book and cassette, in the sale rail for 50p
