Am I being thick here?

Hello all,

Not sure if this is the best place to post it but here goes!

Today I received my new 17-40 L and 50mm 1.8 (Thanks Kerso!) and also from another supplier a Kenko extention tube kit.

Now with the extention tube kit on and the 50mm on top of it, through the view finder it's just a continuous blur, no matter how close or faraway the subject is, no definative object can be made out....

Am I being extremely stupid here and missing the obvious? or do I have problems with my extension kit?

Many Thanks,

Phate.

extension tubes reduce the minimum focus distance, they're used mainly in macro photography.

You didn't by any chance buy extension tubes instead of a teleconverter did you?

Welcome to the forums :)

I bought them to have a crack at Macro whilst using the 50mm prime as anyone else would.

But know matter how close i get to any subject it won't focus on it...I don't need to change any settings at all do I? in the camera?

EDIT: I was being thick - I put the camera REALLY close upto a pencil tip and it focus'd on it :) - Dunce! Lesson learnt.

Ah good, you've got what you wanted then :) Aye, focussing distance with all three tubes is pretty small

Have you tried Manual focus? Might be a silly question I know, but I dont have any extension tubes (yet) :)

Well using the tripod I just took a rather closeup picture of a pencil tip and you can see where the led has been scratched :D - That was with manual focus and all 3 rings so focusing distance of about 5mm :p

Time to have some fun with the 17-40L :D

Ahhh so it's now working? What was the problem, were you underestimating how close you needed to get?

If you have all the tubes on you will need to be increadibly close, the less tubes the further away you can get for focusing

Yeah they can be tricky to use, lots of light is needed as you have to stop it down to f22 for DOF which means the viewfinder is almost dark.
