After shooting at the beach last weekend I got lazy and decided that I didn't need to give my tripod legs a clean or at least a rinse when I got home.

Went to use it today and they're jammed solid.

I've just spent the best part of the morning soaking my tripod legs in the bath then when that didn't work dismantling them. There were bits falling out all over the place! Who knew they contaned so many springs, nuts, bolts, flanges etc etc!!!

They're now more or less good as new but, needless to say, that's not how I wanted to spend my morning off work.

It's well worth the 10 minutes when you get home - take it from a guy who's just spent Valentines Day Morning giving his tripod a bath and a good rub down with oil :naughty:

I've had a tripod with salt and sand stuck in the locking mechanisms, totally ruined it since they would lock the legs after it, I use a canned air to give the sand and salt a good blast

I've still get the odd bit of sand coming out of the joints of my tripod from my holiday last year

I really should show it some more love and give it a good clean!

Glad you managed to sort it. It's definitely worth doing- we always rinsed the dive kit with freshwater afterwards as the salt water is so corrosive and I took that good practice into photography and made sure I always rinsed the tripod if it had been partially submerged

Good shout with the canned air Craig....mines still got some sand lodged in the feet even after it's spa treatment. Nothing worse than that grinding noise of sand against metal.

Absolutely. For the sake of 10 minutes when you get home it's well worth it. On this occasion I was too eager to get uploading to the computer to see all the keepers I'd taken that morning......I was sorely disappointed :-)

Been quite glad my tripod is carbon fibre so far as I have fairly regular visits to the beach! The few metals parts show a bit of corrosion but all the mechanisms work fine :D I did give it a good soak in the bath last time I came back though!

Can't agree more about the grinding noise. Never done the spa treatment, will need to give it a go
