Hello, I have a D700 and I am after a fast mid zoom lens. As much as I'd like the previously mentioned Nikon 24-70, my budget doesn't quite stretch to that. So what are the alternatives? Old or new. I've been looking at all sorts of lenses but I may have missed one. But it also doesn't hurt to get others opinions. I appreciate that I probably won't get the same quality as the Nikon but something that as close as possible to it would be great. My budget is around £400.

Thank you,

Graham

Tamron 28-75 vc....

Nikon 28-70 2.8 - special bit of glass, just as sharp if not sharper than the 24-70. On went on here quite cheap a little while back, about £400 quid if i remember correctly. I paid £500 for mine.
New this lens retailed for around £2k.

Thank you. I've never ventured into tamron territory before, owned every other brand. Are they solid and reliable?
Not bad if you get a sharp one.

I have the Tamron 28-75 and I'm very pleased with it. Last year I hired the Nikon 16-35 to take to Scotland, if I'm honest I didn't notice any great difference.

If the 28-70 (The Beast) is a bit much, consider it's predecessor, the 35-70 f2.8D
Small, light, built like a tank, has a macro mode, and is a good walkabout.
Cheap pro quality Nikon glass,

I'll be advertising my 35-70mm f2.8 tomorrow.

Really sharp lens but need the money for a studio lighting setup and have 50mm and 85mm primes.

I'll take some photo's of it and put the ad up.

Terry.

This is one lens I doubt I will part with, even though I have quite a few primes.
As Terry said, it's sharp, and it works for me as a walkabout lens.

I have had good experiences with both the Tamron 24-70 and the Nikon 24-120 f4. The Nikon is smaller, lighter and obviously has a better range, it makes a good travel lens and you can pick up a mint one for under £400. The Tamron whilst smaller than the Nikon 24-70 is still a fair old weight, I certainly got fed up of carrying it around on days out. However if you get a good copy and need the 2.8 it offers fantastic images for the money. I have had a play with the Tamron 28-75 but always felt that the 28 would be a bit restrictive for me.
