Yes
i want something handheld, pretty light and good battery basically to show pictures on, just for showing people at uni without having to get my laptop out or whatever, if possible as easy to use as the ipad with zooming etc but it needs to be cheap!

orrrr is there not really a good substitute?

How about a good quality digital picture frame? Many have IR remotes to progress forwards/backwards.

(P.S. iPad is still the best answer though :))

Well..... ipads are by far the best, but ive been playing with a "Chimp-Pad" and although not as sleek, sexy and smooth as an ipad they rock.

For around a 100 quid they are a steal. Running Google’s Android 1.9 on a bright 7” TFT touch-screen, the Chimp-Pad has all the features you but at a price that won’t leave you with a major case of buyer’s remorse!

The screen automatically rotates, you’ve got 2GB of storage with up to 32GB available via the SD card slot. WiFi, speaker, microphone, front-facing camera...

I belive the first shipments have arrived, so take a look at their new site here

I can assure you I don't have buyers remorse. If you want the best sometimes you have to pay for it.

Blackberry are launcing the Blackpad in November with a host of tablets hot on their heels.

The ipad might be good as a photo viewer and for surfing (limited use for that) but FOR ME it's b****r all use for anything else. It won't handle my website, it won't handle my database contacts so 75% of my business applications it won't do.

I'm waiting for one to be launched that will do those things and it's just around the corner. Apple products may look nice but they are not the best for quite a few applications.

It all depends what you want your tablet to do.

I too am waiting for something a little smaller than an iPad and take SD cards and/or preferably support tethered shooting

There seems to be an absolute glut of tablets and slates coming to market at the minute. NEXT (yes the clothing retailer) have even just released a basic one for £180.

If you can wait I would give it a month or two to see what the competition brings.

As Android 1.9 isn't an official version is it supported in the normal android app market?

Apparently it is called the Playbook

Sounds as though you need a Windows based tablet to run your site/database - of which there are a few coming in the next few months

iPhone or one of them aweful really small laptops
I would just use my iPhone.

I think You can shoot tethered to an iPad using an eyefi card and the shutter snitch app although I have not personally tried it; am waiting for a CF version of the eyefi card.

I only use my iPad as a portfolio. It looks lovely, can be updated whenever I choose and does not have the weight of my portfolio books!

Thanks for all the replies! ive been looking at the 7" android one, on ebay i can get it for like £65 and i can my sd card straight into it or a micro sd? but does anyone know if i can just plug a normal card reader into the usb part of it? and is the screen actually good for showing people my photos? not clients, just class mates so it doesnt have to be absolutely beautiful

I love my iphone 4 but i cant justify spending all that money on an ipad that doesnt have retina display, no facetime etc, so are there any other alternatives? and as good as my iphone is i cant just put my pictures straight on to it, i have to have my laptop there to faff about with itunes

thanks again guys :)

I'm also interested in this thread, as I'd like something along the lines of an ipad, but preferably running windows, maybe in a few months time

i believe its a micro sd, but they do come with adapters for the bottom so you can add what you like. i will check later. you wont be able to transfer photos from sd to the unit as it has a small hd... but you can certainly view them, check your emails etc.

i was tempted by an ipad at first, but couldn't justify the expense, had an iphone for a while and got bored with it... :)

will check for you, i will ask the importer :)

What's a chimp pad?

I tried Googling and the top link is this thread.

So it's not a real thing then??? Oh dear.

Don't care how much it is, I won't be seen dead buying or using one with that name :nono:

Oh dear, brand snobbery at its worst.

Moving right along... OP you could consider a netbook. Cheaper than an iPad and if you get one that runs Windows it would actually be of more use, albeit not as fast and flashy as a 'Pad. Modern netbooks have moved on a lot since the original ASUS Eee 700/701, which kicked the whole thing off, and have 10"+ screens, decent size keyboards and enough connectivity.

Not brand snobbery at all, I choose to spend my money how I wish and I wish to spend it on an iPad - if it was called the iChimpad I wouldn't have bought that either.

Perhaps some people should spend some money on a sense of humour?

Whenever I see one I have a strange urge to butter some bread on it.

Indeed, I am.

But I also appreciate superior design and technology

Design YES
Technology NOT SURE

Take the iphone, it looks the best phone on the market. But when the first non 3g came out it was behind smart phones tech wise. I myself am becoming a android fanboy but the wife will never sell her iphone.

I had a play with the new Samsung tablet (called a Galaxy?) the other day. Very very nice it is too. Not quite as nice as an iPad but lovely and fast, smooth scrolling, and a beautiful screen. Fairly small as well compared to the iPad, but seemingly a bit thicker and a bit plasticky. It had 3G on it and you could make calls too if you want.

Not sure of the price yet.

The Samsung Galaxy is there new android phone(little brother got one last week)and is more of a iphone rather than ipad.

Unless you want an iPad straight away, I would hang back for another half year. Firstly, Android 3.0 will be released with supposedly better tablet support. There is also WebOS and MeeGo waiting for their turn. Secondly, Dell, Blackberry, Samsung, HP and other smaller but promising firms have all announced new slates. I'm curious where this is heading.

About €760.

I have an iPad I use for my portfolio and I am disappointed. It's almost impossible to get photos showing in the order you want them to unless you change some of the file attributes, or you have a Mac and iPhoto (I think it is).

Ridiculous. Has caused a *lot* of frustration for me and I wish I'd waited and got an alternative. If I'd known this was an issue I'd have never got one.

Samsung have two similarly named products - the Galaxy is the phone, the Galaxy Tab is the tablet referred to above.

Well I want iPad (obviously!) but can't afford one, and my iPhone isn't too bad a photo viewer to be honest. Just a tad small!

i should have made it more clear that the only thing i really wanted it to do was show pictures, i want to be able to pull it out of my bag anywhere, put the sd card straight out my camera into it and look at pictures, absolutely everything else is a bonus lol but i also want the pinch to zoom, ipad photo viewing easy-ness if you get me

the chimp pad looks good but i couldnt find anywhere to buy it?

The new Archos Android tablets look good - available in variety of screen sizes (2-10 inches), and the larger ones should be able to show photos directly off a micro SD card, assuming they're JPGs.

But as others have said wait a few months and the market will be flooded with Android based tablets.
