Alternative to Canon 7d?

I suggest, using Canon, you'll need a 70-200mm f4 IS. That is going to set you back about £700.

I can wish for a lens for my birthday as well, that's not a problem ;)

this is why i dont get why you want to change systems - nikon pro spec bodies are every bit as good (some say better) as the canon ones , so if you already have lenses that fit the nikon it doesnt make sense to change

when you say that the d80 is 'slow' do you mean in terms of focusing (usually more of a lens issue), available shutter speeds (ditto), high iso performance, burst fps, or what ?

A second hand D3 or D2x would be absolutely spot on for the kind of use you are talking about , and would still take most of the lenses you are using on the D80 (and you could keep the d80 as a second body)

If you want to see whats out there perhaps you should hire a 1D , or 7D and a fast lens before making the expensive commitment to jump from one system to the other.

What is why you don't get why I want to change systems? When I say its slow, I mean frames/second. Do you really think I'm that stupid to use over 1200£ on a camera that I've never tried? Of course I've tries the 7D!

So what's your verdict on the 7D ? Is it the reason hy you wanted to move to Canon?

I intend to use the camera for horse photography. Both portraits and competision.
Put your name in your sig then we'll all know you're a gal. :D

Well most people who shoot field sports types of events usually opt for the Canon 1.3X crop sensor of the 1D/1D2/ 1D3 and 1D4 series for the better field of view. The ID series also has the fast focusing and high frame rate which you'd probably appreciate.

I don't shoot horsey things - they make me nervous - a bit too big and prehistoric for me, but I can't imagine you'd have the trouble filling the frame that I would shooting a Wren which is why I go for the 7D.

While I'm sure the 7D would do a great job for you I think a 1D3 is probably more for you and they're getting affordable now. The 1D4 is still current but a bit pricey.

The D3 isnt slow in fps and neither is the d300s - the D2H was at one time the fastest thing on the market (although its quite low resolution).

My point is that if you change systems you need to replace all your lenses and at some point get a second body - and it doesnt make sense to do that when there are perfectly capable high end nikon bodies available.

but at the end of the day its your money and if you can afford to blow £1200 (probably more than that the way prices are going lately) on a 7D or 1Dmk2/3, and several hundred quid on a second body (i'd suggest something like a second hand 40D) and another couple of grand or so on a suite of canon fit lenses and flash guns then fine go for it

but you asked for advice on alternatives - and my suggested alternative is to buy a faster fps nikon, take it or not i could care less.

As to whether i think you're spoilt - thats not really germane - I dont know many 15 year olds who have that kind of cash to throw arround, let alone the money to change systems just because they want to try a diffeent make , or who could get a 70-200 IS as a birthday present, but if you do and you have then again fine its no skin off my nose.

edit: one other point to mention is that on both nikon and canon the image stabiliser is lens based (called IS in canon, OS by sigma, and VR by nikon), if you want a body based system you'll need to go to pentax/oly/ or sony.

Thank you! but i can't find information about 1D3! Horses can be scary, but really fun!
One of my favorite photographs!
BTW: How can i post photographs? (uhm... newbie)

Who said that i "just had 1200£ to blow"? I can use about 1400£
And why would i need a second body in fact?

I really cant be bothered to argue - do what you like , but dont ask for advice if you're going to get bent out of shape when people say stuff you dont want to hear.

and if you are going to be a serious sports/events photographer you need a second body so you can put a long lens on one, and a short lens on the other so you dont miss shots while changing between them

you also need a second body so if- or lets face it when - your primary camera dies you can still provide coverage

It's no good Pete - I think the engagements off mate!

theres very little that canon do that nikon dont

The problem with Nikon is the lenses are £150 or £1500 with nothing in between

Canon 70-200 F/4
300mm F/4 IS
400mm F/5.6
24-105mm F/4
To name a few nikon have no equivalent of

If you have the Nikon lenses already the D300 is a big step up from the D80, if not the 7D or 60D if you want new or a secondhand 1D mk III

true but sigma (and to a lesser extent tamron and tokina) are your freinds there - they do most of there lenses in both fits.

I dunno why i've pushed myself into the 'nikon are good' camp because I belong firmly to the light side of the force and shoot propper cameras  but i just think its bonkers to change systems without a damn good reason

(although admittedly back in the film days i changed from pentax to canon - but that was following an episode where i rolled a floating hide over and wrote off my most expensive body and several lenses - so it made sense to reinvest the insurance claim )

Since the Sony A580 arguably had better high ISO performance than the Canon 7d, I'm presuming the A77 will as well.
Really can you back this up? have you ues both ?
I have two 7D's and know what I find is constance with both and I get good low noise when shooting in RAW and using ACR to convert to TIFF.
See here hand held at ISO 12800 1/50 f/2.8
