Yes
Does anybody recommend a good alternative to Adobe for a change? I don't mind paying, I would prefedr a trial to see what is what, I'm thinking maybe Corel or ACDsee, what do readers think?
I have tried Lightroom but have continually been unable to open it due to getting the same old :

cobblers and I have tried as many options as I have found available but none have fixed the issue. I've done a disc check, all updates, installed 64 bit blah blah blah and Uncle Tom Cobbleys trouser press all to no avail. I've even installed Adobes own 'fix', which promptly incurred a message stating that Adobe couldn't read it's own ******** files.
So, stuff Adobe and their constant requirement for hoop jumping and bring on the competitors. Any takers? ;)

It is unlikely this is Adobe issue. I would not blame them. According to that error, you have corrupted files in your Windows installation - specifically MSVC runtime libraries. Probably as result of a hard crash of your computer, filesystem corruption, disk failure or something like that.

You can try to replace runtime files - c:\Windows\SysWOW64\msvcp*.dll. Probably the best is to do a fresh install your Windows. If you have some corrupted files there is a chance you can have other corrupted files as well.

Taking that aside. It is very difficult to find a good alternative for Lightroom and Photoshop. Last year I've checked trial version of different workflow tools and I am afraid that competitors aren't even close. But I would look at Capture One Pro.

Could you provide a link for the free version please

Thanks for your reply, a question though, if I take the free download am I going to get Bing,or yahoo or any other unwanted searchbar or toolbar or add-ons via the back door?

I tried to use LR5.3, I have Windows 7 home premium,64 bit. I did an online search including Adobes own forums and have done just about everything recommended except from uninstalling windows and re-install. Adobe have been as much help as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest and having spent good money on LR4 I refuse to give them any more of my hard earned.
I have absolutely no intention of spending any more with these shysters.
My 4.4 version appears to run fine but doesn't support the Sony A7 raw files or tethering hence my attempt to upgrade.

Free version of Corel as suggested earlier.

You might say what version of LR you have and exactly what OS you use ...

Failing LR, Capture One ...

"Free" version of what?

Paintshop pro photo 3 naturally...
Actually I have LR 5 so maybe I won't need it (assuming it'll install on a brand new Windows 8.1 PC)

FFS don't download this, you'll get a rogue toolbar (default-search.net) and the pesky yahoo search engine for free as well.
Wish I'd never started now.o_O

Theres a free lightroom-ish program called darktable, but I have no idea if it's run on Windows 7. Also the newer versions of ACDsee was supprisingly good last time I tried it (has a super shadow/highlight thingy)
