If this is supposed to raise awareness how come I still dont know what ALS stands for? Cant be doing a very good job.

2p.

it's the American name for what we term Motor Neurone disease

Same thing - different way of referring to it - but the outcome in most cases, is the same though the time for the final outcome does vary enormously ,

It's a clever bit of social engineering, preying on the narcissism and vanity of the average social media user to generate money for charity.

You can be cynical, but not critical. It's for a good cause ultimately.

In what way is my talking about it a good job exactly?
now you know what it is. You may not know what the initials stand for, but you have an awareness. Your post may create an awareness for others, who may then be inspired to do the challenge, and raise more money for the cause.
Pretty obvious I'd have thought.:p

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - is what ALS actually stands for, but in fairness, Motor Neurone Disease is both easier to say and remember and they are essentially the same thing, ALS being the American version. Its done a good job, you are talking about it, which means you are now aware of it, even if the letters were a bit incomprehensible, and the whole point of original exercise was to raise awareness of much lesser known charity and little understood disease than some of the bigger ones. Yes, it has raised a lot of money, for both American and UK versions of the charity [and possibly same in other countries, not sure] but the idea was for awareness. Tipping a bucket of icy cold water over yourself gives you just a second or two of feeling the same, when the nerves just stop working and responding to what the brain is telling them, hence the idea.

Could someone not instigate a JLS ice bucket challenge where JLS immerse their heads up to their necks in an ice bucket for 10 minutes?
Too late they broke up last year, unless of course they got back together again since.

Don't even whisper that!!!
It's just not worth the risk.

I'm intrigued to know how they became successful. I can honestly say I've never heard any of their music. Same goes for Beiber, Cyrus and One Direction.

Adolescent hormones have a lot to answer for. It's not new.
Bay City Rollers
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet
Kajawhatsit.....
It's an endless list over the years.
I can't say I've ever gone for the teen bands....but I still say good luck to them.

the Beatles ;)

A strange post.

You became aware of a disease you had not heard of and didn't know what it was. So rather than find out you posted a thread stating the fact you didn't know what it was?

There is nowt stranger than folk

Edit. ...thought the better of it.....

No I became aware of an ALS Ice bucket challenge. Didnt know it was a disease. I do now after the replies to the post. But videos of people pouring water over themselves did nothing to enlighten me of that fact.

Well spotted.

ALS to me is Anti Lag System....why do Americans have to call conditions another name when there is perfectly good one already??

In this case they don't....they're using the correct clinical name.
In every day terms over there it's known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Those examply simply highlight the stupidity of the people, not the challenge.

that's 3 and I'm from Liverpool

I can understand that though. Walk through the centre and there's numerous 'street entertainers' with mics and amplifiers murdering beatles (and other) songs

Well spotted.

The videos aren't supposed to give you information about what it is. The videos are supposed to draw attention to it.

In your case it looks like it's working then.

You were made aware of something and after becoming aware you now know what it is.

:-)

ALS is a large motor factors outlet in Exeter and over the years, they've had significant donations from me!
