Alright, I'm thick. With that in mind...

Hi all, I hope you don't mind me asking what is probably a ridiculous question but here goes.
I have a Canon 1D MkIIN and have just purchased an interfit Stellar X 150 flash head. So, can someone tell me why the flash does not fire every time I release the shutter? I'm using the supplied sync lead.
I don't have the first clue with this stuff, so take it slowly :)

Thanks in advance,

Do you mean if you're firing fast? Studio-type heads need to receycle longer than a flashgun so if you're on motordrive, it will generally miss a beat as the flash head warms up.

If it's something other than this, make sure the lead/connection isn't damaged and is in place correctly

Yeah, I know about the recycle time.
I dearly hope it's not the sync lead, is there owt else it could be? Should it fire with every release of the shutter (recyc' allowing)?

Yep, should fire with every release once it's recycled.

Are the charge/ready lights coming on between shutter releases?

I'd probably go and get a new sync lead - a few quid - and see if that does the job. If it doesn't then I'd have the head looked at. Is it new and under warranty?

Does it fire by pressing the test button on the flash?

Does it fire using the optical slave on the flash (with a normal hotshoe flash on your camera in manual mode acting as the trigger)?

Hi guys, yeah it's fully recharged when I release the shutter and yeah it flashes when I press the test button.
I'm not using a hotshoe flash.
I only got it yesterday so I'll just ask the supplier to send me a new sync' lead and, hopefully that will cure it.

Thanks for the input.

Sync leads are notoriously fragile. You can get a tool to fix the PC end but biting it usually works.

I don't use the blasted things because they are so unreliable!
Hope you get it sorted.

... but NOT while the other end is plugged in!

Such a terrible connector though... wish a big name (*cough* nikon) would take the lead and put 3.5mm jack syncs on their next line of cameras...

Thanks again everyone.
I have contacted the supplier and they're sending me a replacement lead out today.
Fingers crossed it works!

they're sooo standard, I can walk into almost any supermarket and buy a new one let alone if I go to a maplins or random electronics shop

Wash your mouth out!!! :)

I would be lost without the standard PC socket with the screwlock fitting - they're brilliant when connected to my SB800s; never have the lead fall out and the fit is always snug and effective.

To the OP, get a cheap wireless trigger and you'll be sorted :)

We use the bowens Pulsars at work but personally, I think they're overkill for what they cost - £220 for a transmitter/reeiver - plus they eat batteries.

These might be good as dual-purpose (studio/off-camera) - the receiver has a jack plug so you can attach it to the studio head.

I use Elinchrom Skyports for my 'strobist' stuff but they work fine in a studio and come with an array of leads so they fit just about everything. £125 for a transmitter/receiver is a lot though.

This might be a good buy for £50 - looks perfect for studio heads.

Alternatively, have a butchers at one of the ebay (phottix/yongnuo) trigger sets - I'm sure they're about £30 for a receiver and a transmitter and they should fit studio heads with a sync lead.
