I've decided I can't avoid paying for a brand new 17-55 f2.8 (canon this is) Waiting for a second hand one will take years at this rate, and despite my attempts at convincing myself to go for something L (24-105) or something cheaper (15-85, 10-22(no idea either!)) The 17-55 f2.8 is too perfect to ignore any longer.

I've had a look around, and it's £777 on Amazon, but £689 on Simply Electronics. I've seen what a poor reputation they seem to have, and I'm guessing it's well founded. Is it truly not worth the risk to buy from there? And I'm guessing it would come minus a warranty too?

Any other suggestions for the best price for it?

Thank you all as always,

A quick search brings up MartinsCameraShop.co.uk as having it at £690 or thereabouts. Not sure what they're like though. The site looks legit, but that doesn't mean much these days.
Link here if you want to look for yourself. I think its the right lens.

Glad you made the Right choice....

Martins camera shop has a good looking site, and nearly ordered but concerned about reviews decided not to. Also tried looking for address on Google maps it came up as a Hair Salon which was strange.

It's going to be a severe test of stamina trying to find one at the right price, and the right shop so good luck with your search.

Regards.

Thanks for those links guys,

I'm guessing Simply Electronics isn't worth considering?

Also I should definitely check with Kerso as per his price

Kerso

Or digital rev?

I tend to buy my electronic gear in the US, as it generally works out cheaper.

Do you have any friends there, or know anyone visiting soon? You could have a friend ship it, or bring it back for you.

There are a couple places doing good deals on this lens, eg:

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 is USM Lens Kit with Set of 3 Filters Case Hood Extended Warranty Cap Keeper Cleaning Kit for All Canon Eos Digital Cameras $1,150 = £712

Hong Kong is another option (I bought two couple lenses in HK a few weeks ago), but you don't get a global warranty, just an Asian one.

Have you considered the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM with better center sharpness and build quality for £520 including hood and standard EX 3 year warranty from a UK dealer.
:)
Sorry for pimping the Sigma :) just I have been considering getting it and would like to hear of other people's experience with it. It seems to be a serious contender now to the Canon and the only thing it lacks is FTM focus. The Canon does have better corner sharpness through most of the focal range, but the Sigma's center sharpness is actually better than the Canon wide open.

They have a Brand New one in stock price maybe a little high but they maybe close to you.
I bought the new 70-300L from them with no problems, the website is really a description of what they sell with links to Manufacturers sites.

Chichester 17 Eastgate Square.

01243-531536 is the telephone number.

Part Ex is welcome too I believe.

I have no other links to them other than having purchased a lens.

I hope this might be of help to you.

Regards.

I'm dying to buy this lens and I got a price off Kerso recently and it was £695. Martin's camera shop have been top of CPB's list for a while, but like Canonbabie I was put-off by various comments, some about imported goods.

I'm still waiting for somewhere 'respectable' to have a UK copy for sale under £700.

Also have to remember the VAT rise has bumped the price up.
