Being one who has always gone on about how I find it crazy when people buy hundreds or thousands of £'s worth of DSLR and then leave it at home or buy a compact when they go abroad, I find myself less than two weeks away from my holidays to New York and Canada and questioning whether I should take it!! Not because I find it inconvenient or unsafe, it's all insured for theft etc on the house policy, but because I'm worried that I'll come home with a load of mediocre snapshots and wish I'd never bothered! Is this normal or am I being unnecessarily down on my own stuff (again)?
Would love to hear from those of you who have been here and whether you took your stuff or not and regretted taking/leaving it. Also, would you care to share your favourite shot from either location?

I think it really depends on the type of holiday as to what equipment anyone might take. Most people tend to holiday in the height of summer, when places can be crowded and the light is very harsh.
Also if it is a family holiday it can be difficult to 'escape' for several hours with the camera.
Last summer I visited Venice along with some other places and I took one dlsr and one lens, and one compact. It just did not seem practical to carry everything as I did not have the luxury of bringing in it the boot of the car.
However if I was heading for somewhere like Iceland I would drag the lot:)

NYC in 2 weeks for me. Pondering the same. I've just bought an RX100 which will definitely be coming, but don't know whether to bring the D800 or not. I have 5 days there with the missus, and she might not appreciate me lugging a bag of gear around and stopping to take shots every 5 minutes [I just know I'll do that, so much to see and shoot!] - Might bring it with just the 24-70 and set one evening for just shooting [when she's off shopping]

But for the most part I'll have the compact rx100 in my pocket ready for action.

Will be there at the same time then Cagey. As I say, my dilemma is not about carrying the camera, I don't mind that side of it at all. It's just the frustration that the 'hobby' gives me which makes me think it's not worth it. I may just let the missus take her little compact and get the normal holiday snaps.

Oh I know, I'd be the same. I have all kinds of long exposure city night shots in my head, already choosing the frames I'll hang them in :D but, in reality I'll probably get frustrated not achieving the results I desire when there. Oh well, find an Irish bar and that'll sort it ;)

We're heading the 5th Dec, staying in Manhattan.

Ha, exactly like that. I have seen amazing photos from there on here and 500px and in my head, I am the same. Already picked the space for the big canvas that I won't get! ha. We are heading on the 4th and also staying in Manhattan for 4 nights, then picking the car up and who knows where? The plan is to head for Canada.

Good Compact + lightweight travel tripod + folder of Cokin 'A's for handholding ?

I had an X100 that I bought with this holiday in mind but sold it due to lack of use! :bang: :cuckoo:

I have a gorillapod focus that will do for both D800 + Rx100 ;) Hoping our room has a good view.

If you happen to stumble across some eeejit trying to hook the pod around a pole, that'll be me ;)

Used my 40D + all the kit on my honeymoon because I knew I would be stationed in a few key places or be getting organised transport elsewhere. Bought a Fujifilm X100 for Toronto because I knew I would be walking a lot and didn't want to carry a massive kit bag with me. Worked out perfectly for me.
