In general I am not too bad, except a few things like tobacco, bad mould or really excessive cat smell. However, I have recently become very sensitive to raw carrots. I ate one and it made me feel pretty miserable like never before. I don't really understand how this could escalate from no sensitivity to fairly unpleasant instant reaction in a space of a few months. I'll obviously avoid them in the future, but what else (and why?) could be waiting for me?

Life :eek::rolleyes:

I'd see your doctor rather than consult with an off topic bit of a forum if you've got concerns about your health.

Raw carrots are usually fine to eat. I've never heard if an allergy to tobacco. A lot don't like the smell but that's not the same as an allergy.

An allergy or intolerance of carrots isn't particularly common but isn't unknown.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6665303.stm and there are a few more foods you should be careful around now..
"those allergic to carrots, for example, could also have reactions to the rest of the carrot family - parsley, coriander, parsnip, celery, fennel, dill and anise"

Food allergies and intolerances can come out of nowhere.

As a human, you cannot be prepared for any hand you might be dealt in life. When circumstances change, adjust your life to suit and carry on.
at this stage be grateful that your so called allergies appear to be in the most basic form. Although the carrot thing I would call an intolerance rather than an allergy.

Disliking the smell of cats is not an allergy.

I shouldn't think it would be difficult to avoid those things without seriously disrupting your life.
I must be allergic to farts! Can't stand the smell:p

That's interesting. I regularly eat parsley and coriander, including yesterday and that doesn't cause any issues so far. Eat a carrot and the fun starts straight away.

Disliking the smell of cats is not an allergy.

Except it also makes me sneeze badly for quite a while until after I vacated the contaminated area... and takes my tobacco intolerance to incredibly high new levels (i.e. instant sneezing, sore eyes, etc). That isn't just a dislike.

In fairness none of the things the OP mentions are allergies

Do you have a MD certificate and willing to put your signature on this? No?

I would most certainly say it was a pretty nasty allergic reaction with a fair amount of typical symptoms

Trust me until you have suffered from anaphylaxis that aint nasty!

Watching our 2 year old son almost die after having peanut butter is nasty!!!!

I would recommend seeing a GP but I'd hate for you to have to explain this all to the receptionist on duty who might actually have the audacity to ask you why you need to see the doctor. The cheek of it. Outrage!!!

How unwell did the raw carrots make you? Did you wash them?

Have you seen a doctor?

I peel and wash all my vegetables very religiously. It was also ecological carrots, so I'd discount fertiliser or insecticide contamination.

I felt unwell enough for a good hour with swelling and cough. Drinking plenty of tea made it a lot better.

What do you really think a GP would tell me? 1) not to eat carrots 2) keep some anti-allergy medicine just in case... They don't have much clue why allergies start.
It could be that carrots have some common protein with cat special fluid, tobacco, or perhaps there were traces of fungus roots in the carrots. I'll easier find out by researching literature than asking a GP. They don't even have PhDs normally.

Nasty doesn't have to be "life-threatening". These are two different terms you should differentiate between.

I think it's just general wussery, should change his user name to ST4 Lite.

Believe me, I am a very different beast to ST4 and would you please never ever refer to me like that. P.S. Nice selfie in your avatar :p

Wtf is an ecological carrot?

Wtf is an ecological carrot?

I dont know but i think i have sussed the problem!
The cat had a crafty fag whilst propped up against a mouldy wall before p***ing on the carrot that the OP ate - thats got to be it!!!!!!!

It's probably a bit like an organic one. When someone's just labelled you ST4-lite, it's perfectly acceptable to be a little flummoxed for words for a short while afterwards.

I'd try normal non organic carrots preferably from another supplier to rule out something they're doing.

I agree its more likely to be something on the carrot rather than in it. Nope, never heard of adverse reactions to carrots particularly and of course it could have been just a co-incidence, that you reacted to something else at the same time. If you are that concerned, get a friend round and try eating them again, perhaps from a different batch though, just in case it did have fungal spores or some such on it. See what happens.

If its an ecological one, is that the same as organic? It probably has got something on it.
I'm allergic to elastoplast an hard work, someone had to say it :-)

Seems to be a link with carrot allergy and birch pollen allergy.

Do you suffer with hay fever at all?

Oh and btw, about really bad cat smells... is it not possible it is actually cats you have an intolerance of? By that, I mean is there is a really bad smell of them, chances are there are a lot of them around, leaving their dead skin and fur lying around.

ETA: sorry, had to add this, what happens when you cuddle a cat? :D ;)

Mild hayfever for a few days in spring, yes. It could be that.

On cats - I'll never truly find out because I am no longer living in the "cats' house" (thank God for that :) ).

As I understand it its the cats dried out syliver from when they clean themselves that's causes the allergy

bit of hay fever for me in the summer thats it..

except for 13 odd years ago when my wife was pregnant with our first.... having tea and all of a sudden I told the wife my throat feels weird, 10 mins later ambulance crew are shooting me with adrenaline, opening my airway and rushing me hospital.. this happened 4 times over the next 2 months and never knew what it was, I hadn't change brands of anything food or chemical wise, cannot stand shellfish, I had all the those tests where they draw squares on your arms and put stuff on them looking for skin reactions(cannot remember the name), but I was allergic to nothing..

been fine ever since.. it was very strange, a bit scary but mostly strange.

Please go see a doctor OP swelling is not normal and needs to be looked into. i have problems with lots of things and if i listened to most that is said on the internet about it god help me.
