My wife's ancient iPhone 8+ had a message that an update was available (16.7.13) but after 3 days of trying she gave up as all she got was a repeated message saying it wasn't available at the moment and to try again later.

Updates get released at different times in different countries, Malc. It's worth trying again in a few days.

Didn't think of that, Garry, thanks...although this is the first time either her or I have had such a message.

iOS and iPadOS 26.3 are available, plus all the usual suspects.

Also, Apple haven't forgotten the older devices:

Apple is being very obnoxious about updates to ios26. Keep having to turn off auto update and it often tries to schedule an update anyway. Almost got me the other day but I refused the terms and conditions.

I've turned off downloads too but it still tried to force this update.

I used to get very few spam calls on my iPhone but in the last year the no of such calls is ever increasing. I rarely answer such calls and usually block the nos but they are annoying. Any tips to avoid these calls? Is Truecaller any use or are the other who called me sites just as good?

iPhone IOS 26 has an option to answer calls from people not on your contact list and intercept it's called Call Screening' - Settings > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers.
SWMBO and me have no problems now. :)

Thanks. I’ll try that.

On my iphone (11 Pro Max, on the latest IOS26.2.1) I get loads of spam calls, but the vast majority have the header "Suspected Spam" displayed so I just cut them off instead of answering. I don't want to block all unknown calls as I do sometimes get genuine ones.
Unfortunately I think all my spam calls relate to either "we have a cheaper mobile service for you" or "You owned a diesel landrover..../ ...you had a finance agreement". Almost unavoidable these days, and with call number spoofing they change the number every time so blocking doesn't work.

Yes, it's a PITA. I don't remember them ever being quite so insistent on previous releases. I'm not on the latest update of 18, but I've no idea how to get the latest of that release without inadvertently making the no return trip to 26!

Funny, I only get one or two spam calls, or even emails, per week and I don't have any specific blocker installed. I try to be careful about not accepting cookies where possible though.

My increasing no of spam calls has coincided with changing my provider. I hope this is just a coincidence.

I think I'm going to get my wife to try the Call Screening option by updating her phone to IOS26. She gets a lot of spam/scam phone calls, sometimes 2 or 3 per day. Like others, the majority are wanting to talk about a great deal to change provider, or "I'm calling about your car accident..." We are both currently on IOS 18.7.x

Just be aware that you may miss some important calls. For example, our Doctors' surgery always comes up as Number Withheld. As they do call me often, this could cause missed appointments or test results.

It's more intelligent than that and can display the callers recorded answer to the question and allow you to answer - we were able to take a call from our Tesco delivery driver over the weekend, totally unknown number to us.

That doesn’t work with Number Withheld. In such a case it simply doesn’t answer. I very rarely get pure scam calls. As I said, less than one a week. But Number Withheld calls are more important. Moreover, once again they are rarely spam or scam calls.

One persons experience is different to another, you may be unfortunate.

Unfortunate? Experiencing very few unwanted calls? :)

It says "The new update carries build number 22H333 and is meant for users who either cannot move to the newer software branch or prefer to stay on the previous version for now." [My emphasis...]

I'm in the second camp, but I have not been able to find anything to tell me how to make this happen, but OTOH pretty much everything I read says, if your phone can take 26 then the 18.7 upgrades are not available. I do hope it'a right, though!

I assume you leave Automatic Updates off and never do a manual update until you're ready. Perhaps someone else out there has a better answer.

This the one where age verification comes for IOS itself?
Yes, mine cleared on the basis of length of time with Apple, wife's needed to bypass credit card scan and scanned driving licence.

Yes, and the one that's caused a lot of people on Reddit to decide to dump Apple and go with an Android phone. Apple really haven't thought very deeply about how this will affect people in the UK that don't have a credit card or a driving licence. Some people have got it to work by scanning one side of their passport twice. Others have found that a National ID card works, but that costs, and has a 3-week waiting time.

I am still using macOS Sequoia on my M1 MacBook Pro, am holding off from updating to Tahoe as there are issues apparently with the audio software I use , Audacity and also use other open source image editing software which I am nervous about wether it will be ok with Tahoe
To be honest as long as the security is being updated I will stick with Sequoia

I’m staying with Sequoia on my iMac as I’m not confident that my older versions of Photolab & Affinity will be okay.
Updating my iPhone has broken my Fitbit App, making some aspects of the watch unusable!

Sorry, was talking about the iOS age verification. Meant to quote Garry's post above:

I’ve not been asked for age verification, and I have a plethora of Apple devices.

Beginning to lose my patience! I don't have a credit card and it won't recognise my driving licence!

Some people have reported that it works best if you lay the licence on a dark background, then frsme the licence to take up most of the screen. I had to have two goes at it.

If your Apple account is old enough, it can register you as an adult silently, behind the scenes. No one (yet) seems to know exactly what "old enough" means.

Tried it quite a few times. I've seen it suggested that rebooting the phone helps so will try that.

Mine is 17 years old so would've thought that would qualify

Hmm … I’ve been on Apple since (about) 2015. And I have certainly used a credit/debit card directly on Apple a good few times, including Apple subscriptions for extra storage.
