Anyone using the apple pencil, what apps do you use for converting handwriting to text?

iPadOS 14+ does that natively — Scribble, I think you have to activate it in Settings.

Edit, yes, in Settiings/Pencil

Just about everything I've bought from Apple has been charged to 80%. Probably just dropped a few percent sitting in the box. Is it the latest, new iPad?
Yes. 2021 M1 iPad Pro 12.9"

Brilliant, thanks*

*It's not for me. Mrs Marc is thinking of getting an iPad & Pencil. She has a MacBook Pro and iPhone 11 but has a Kindle Fire which is pretty crap tbh.

Question: Is it possible to have 2 timers running on an iphone? It would be really useful for my OH when cooking.

My Android phone does it but it seems the iphone won't.
You can on an Apple watch, not on a phone, from what I can see.

Instead of using timers you can use the reminder function instead. You can set multiple ones so you can just set a load of them so you have one for each stage of whatever it is you are doing. I'm pretty certain I've done that as you can use Siri and say 'set reminder for an hour's time to do X' or set reminder for 6pm to do X.

Thanks, didn’t realise you can have multiple timers on the watch.

"Hey Siri set a pasta timer for 10 minutes"
"Hey Siri set a pizza timer for 7 minutes"

There's often a battery issue for the first few days as the phone does a lot of management stuff, indexing various bits and pieces, and often quite a few more apps needing to be updated. But there did seem to be more people complaining about the battery with 15.4, and 15.4.1 is supposed to address this.

It’s been confirmed that 15.4.1 solved the battery issues for some phones, but made it worse for the 11 and 13 amongst others unfortunately.

She won't use Siri, so that's a non-starter!

If you set these reminders, can you check how long left to go on each one, on the phone screen?

Looks like we'll continue to use the Pixel for this sort of thing.

My 13 Pro Plus doesn't seem to have a problem, but the battery is one of the reasons the phone is so huge.

No, you can check Reminders to see what time they were set to trigger an alert, which is useful if you use Siri to set them in, say, 25 minutes time, but you then have to mentally calculate how much time is left on each.

This is not ideal, but then Apple often overlook the simplest of features, no matter how much it has been requested. Like a clipboard history, for instance. Fifteen years, and we're still waiting for that one.

Yes, curious isn’t it. They seem to be locked into the Jobsian vision of giving people what they don’t know they want! Which is good but maybe stops them paying enough attention to what people need ;).

No battery problems with my "12 Pro Max".

Basic 11 and no battery issues.

Don't have one, but looking at the specs for the 2021 MacBook Pro, it has 3 Thunderbolt ports and 1 MagSafe 3
Thanks. I think it has the port, but not a MagSafe charger in the box. See,s a strange decision not to supply a MagSafe charger though.

I’m currently debating whether to upgrade the battery on my 8 year old MacBook Pro 15, or buy new. Only problem is I have a 1tb hard drive and don’t want to downgrade, that makes a new M1 quite expensive!

Apple have stopped supplying chargers with a lot of devices, it seems to be assumed that you'll just use the one from previous. I was quite surprised to get one with my iPad.

I have recently got an iPhone 13 mini and my wife a 13 neither came with chargers unfortunately
My MacBook Pro did come with a charger and lead

It‘s the plug they have stopped supplying. Samsung have done the same with S range phones, as have Google with the Pixel 6 range.

Yeah, That's what I meant. I've obviously be watching too many YouTube videos where they refer to them as chargers/charging bricks.

And a watchOS update

I've been testing out RAW vs ProRAW on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, using Lightroom for editing.

Got to say both are very good and on the ultra wide and wide cameras they blow my Canon G7x MKII away, and come very close to quality wide primes & zoom lenses on my Sony A7 III. Compared to the processed standard Raw I've found ProRAW is sharper overall but the colours look flat and unnatural.

I'm probably leaning towards using standard RAW as it offers more control and has less fringing on the light/dark areas where ProRaw enhances the exposure and colour.
The JPEG's images apply too much sharpening - if there was a way to turn that down a bit then i'd be happy with those.

RAW on the left and ProRAW on the right in these examples

iPhone 13 Pro makes a good case for leaving the "proper" camera gear at home when going on holiday, not sure I can do it though.

HC-1 by Pete Downham Photography, on Flickr

Very nice capture Pete, liking this one very much.

"I think you've got a very good point about leaving a camera at home and just taking an iPhone, I find I'm using mine much more these days and mine is the "12 Pro Max" so you're unit is a step up from mine and obviously better. I don't mind leaving my camera out if I'm going to familiar territory so knowing in advance what I'm likely to need, but unfamiliar areas where there's a possibility of me not visiting again then I would always take a camera with me At the moment. I'm currently waiting for the "iPhone 14" series as the rumours say it's going to be quite a bit of kit"

My only issue with iPhone camera (and probably other mobile cameras) is the 4:3 aspect ratio. I much prefer the wider, 3:2, 16:10 or 16:9 look.
I know you can crop later but that just means you need to frame the shot with the crop in mind.

Coming from a DSLR/Mirrorless - square (ish) photos just look odd.

I don’t understand, 16:9 is the native frame on iPhones (at least on mine) for photos and always on video, though you can get square videos with an unadvertised setting.

Which iPhone do you have?

Edit. Just checked my old iPhone SE (original SE) and that is 4:3 so it must vary but I suspect they are all 16:9 now.

The screen might be 16:9 but the images which come from the camera are 4:3. You can change the option to 16:9 but it just crops the image
I'm using an iPhone 13 Pro Max.

More research needed on my part! You do seem to be correct. I mostly use 1:1 or crop to that (Including taking videos) since it’s easier for me to hold vertically, otherwise I prefer 4:3 so though I’ve seen 16:9 as a choice I’ve not deliberately used it :(.

Maybe getting a gimbal like DJI would help or even just something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08929VQCW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ailun-Adap...8389&sprefix=phone+holder+for+,aps,96&sr=8-4?

I use it for shooting video at gigs and while not as good as mu dji gimbal its cheap and discreet

Micro four thirds uses the 4:3 aspect ratio and medium and large format are mostly ‘squarer’ than 16:9 or 3:2.
I have found 4:3 to be preferable to 3:2 especially in portrait orientation. Occasionally I may crop close to 3:2 on landscape orientation but not frequently.
