Am I correct in understanding that universal control is using an iPad as an extension of a MacBook ? so using an iPad and MacBook together I could have one photo editing program open on the MacBook for example DXO photolab and another for example the MacBook version of Affinity photo open on the iPad ?

I stand to be corrected but I'm not sure you could view one as an extension of the other ... both can be controlled by the same mouse and keyboard.
You could PP an image in DXO PL on one device, save it and then drag it across and drop it into Affinity on the other device but you can't drop a photo onto another device unless there is an app to support it.

So would the iPad be running iPad apps or Mac apps sorry I’m not very computer literate
Will try it out anyway though it sounds really useful

I think that the Mac will be using its normal apps and the iPad the same.
It seems just a means of moving between the two rather than incorporating one with the other. :)

Ahh I see thanks still be useful

We already have that via Sidecar. You set up your iPad to be an extended screen for your MacBook, so you can do exactly what you're asking for, but both programs are running on the Mac.

Thanks will have a look , didn’t know about that
I’ve recently moved from PC to doing all my editing on MacBook still learning

I'm very much like you with regards to that Pete, I changed from Windows to MacBook Pro about two and a half years back. It took me a time or two to get my head around it but there's no way I would go back to Windows now. I think the integration between Apple devices alone is worth paying a bit more for.

I think it's only right to give you all fair warning. I've just taken the plunge and bought an iPad.

There will be questions, many questions!

That's a positive "Result" in my book Marc, they're one hell of a good bit of kit. Congrat's and "ENJOY"

I should also add that I bought THIS to go with it. :naughty:

That's also an "Excellent" thing to have as well Marc, especially as you can power the iPad from the keyboard and still have the port on the actual iPad free for other things. The only thing I'm not so keen on with the Magic Keyboard is that for me it doesn't hinge open far enough and when I have the iPad hinged back as far as it will go the bottom edge of the iPad makes it a tad difficult to operate the top row of keys.

Yes, I watched a couple of youtube videos which mentioned that so I'll wait and see.

Just got a notification from DPD, the iPad will be here between 10.57 & 11.57. The keyboard later today.

Well this is a first, no questions*

What a stunning bit of kit, and the magic keyboard is the icing on the cake!

Don't say I didn't warn you Marc, the new iPads & Magic Keyboards are on the next level. I pretty much do all of my design work, correspondence, and photo PP on mine.

It just works ™

I thought I'd asked this before, but can't find it. When I connect my iPhone (old SE) to my MacBook Pro (2014), in order to transfer some photos, the MBP opens Apple Photos fine. But then the MBP Photos screen alternates between Library and iPhone, while the iPhone itself beeps about once a second, occasionally briefly flashing up a window asking whether I trust the MBP. I have not been quick enough (or the window doesn't last long enough) to press the "Trust this computer" button. I can't find a seting on the iPhone or the Mac that would resolve this. The Mac is on Big Sur 11.6.3 (apparently I could update to 11.6.5) and the iPhone is on IOS 15.3.1 (could update to 15.4).

Any ideas, anyone?

Yup, phone & watch.

iPhone, iPad Pro & iMac M1 all updated.

I updated my old SE to 15.4 yesterday while on charge. When done, put it in my pocket, later found it very warm, charge down from 100% to 70% in an hour and dropping by 1% every 10-15 seconds! Closed all apps and restarted, and it seems a bit better, but it seems there is a battery management issue with 15.4. I hope 15.4.1 will fix this!

There's often a battery issue for the first few days as the phone does a lot of management stuff, indexing various bits and pieces, and often quite a few more apps needing to be updated. But there did seem to be more people complaining about the battery with 15.4, and 15.4.1 is supposed to address this.

I hope it’s unconnected with the update but my iPad Pro keeps dropping the WiFi connection today despite the fact the another iPad 2 feet away is having no such trouble :(.

Ok, so I do have a couple of questions. My iPad arrive with the battery at 77%. Is that because it's charged at 100% before being boxed up and turnover is that rapid that it does n't sit in storage for very long before being sold? I also just bought a Magic Trackpad, and that arrived with the battery at 96%!

The other question is do do with Apple stickers, what do people do with them? I watched quite a few YouTube videos, especially on the iPad Magic Keyboard, and during the unboxing portion, quite a few expressed disappointment at the lack of stickers. Really? I keep all the boxes from Apples products and the stickers are still inside them.

Apple says lithium batteries last longer if they are not at 100% for extended periods — if you put on charge overnight it partially charges and then does the last bit just before you wake up. At least that’s true with some chargers/settings/devices.

On your 75%, it was probably charged to that originally. Usual recommendation for long term storage is not with either empty of full battery but partly charged. I don’t think this is unique to Apple batteries.

I’ve no idea what people do with stickers — on their forehead perhaps as protection against Bill Gate’s microchips in the vaccines?

Ok, hat makes sense I suppose.

Question: Is it possible to have 2 timers running on an iphone? It would be really useful for my OH when cooking.

My Android phone does it but it seems the iphone won't.

Sorry to hear your OH is two-timing

I don’t think you can set two timers except by setting one as an alarm. You can have many via alarms.

There are work arounds using Siri to set alarms at, say, 15 minutes ahead to save calculating each time and there are apps that will do it.

There are several stopwatch/timer apps in the apple App Store. One or two seem to allow multiple timings at once. Might be worth a look.

Just about everything I've bought from Apple has been charged to 80%. Probably just dropped a few percent sitting in the box. Is it the latest, new iPad?

The other question is do do with Apple stickers, what do people do with them?

Stick them on their PCs. :) Mine are all still in their boxes, ready for when I sell the gadgets.

I use Reminders for this. "Hey, Siri, remind me to put the lobsters in in ten minutes!" "Hey Siri, remind me to heat the oven chips in twenty minutes!" :)

It's usually quicker than bringing up an app.
