I probably won't get a chance until tomorrow. I liked using it on Android Auto when I had my HTC so looking forward to using it again. Apple maps has improved over the last couple of years so am interested to see how google maps has moved on in that time.
 
Updated my phone via pc ( 4 hours :( ) and even though it charges when I connect to the usb in the car, my CarPlay says “ connect to phone via USB “.

It is. Otherwise it wouldn’t be charging.

Hoping it’ll sort itself later on

Just used it on the drive to the gym. Love how you can have a satellite view instead of map view. Her voice just isn’t as sexy as Siri’s though!

Google maps gives more options, avoid motorways for example, and I can view the steps of the route (and alternatives)

Apple maps gives the same options (re motorways, tolls), but you have to preselect them in the phone app. The alternative routes are also their in Apple Maps.

I’ll have to do some proper testing to decide which I prefer.

I see Waze isn’t available yet.

I can never seem to find it in Apple maps, even on the phone.Google maps seem a little more intuitive, for me anyway.

Yes, they're still working on it, a couple of weeks apparently. I've not used Waze, will be interesting to see how it compares.

To be honest I don't know anybody getting an XR or XS anytime before their contract is due for renewal, I get the feeling that as nice as the devices are they don't offer enough differences to entice a lot of people to upgrade their contracts as much as the iPhones did a couple of years ago (iPhone 4 - 6 especially).

Out of curiousity, and not trolling..... If someone has an iPhone 7 or 8, and they aren't due for renewal, what could justify the upgrade? Other than the status of having the latest apple device?

As a 6+ owner the only thing that interests me is the screen and the camera upgrades, the computational side of things is starting to get impressive. Will look to get a Max used in 6 months or so but probably won't as what I have is still more than good enough. What is more impressive to me is the Series 4 watch.

bit of a mystery..i updated to ios12 on Tuesday and everything yesterday was fine with imessage. This morning, i went to message my wife and there is no string showing in the app - all of her messages have disappeared.

So i take a screenshot of my message list and send them to her...and my son replies asking why I'm sending him messages. I look at the top of the display and it shows my son as the contact.

I try and type a new message to my wife...and it brings up the string that my son has replied to, with nothing from her.

My wife messages me and suddenly the contact details of the previous message from my son changes to my wife ( are we still following this ?? )

Now all my son's messages have disappeared, replaced by my wife.

I reply...and it changes my wife's details to my son's and he replies..

The " send and receive" are all our own numbers. My wife and my youngest have no issues - they're on ioS11.* but me and my eldest are on 12 have have problems

We all use the same apple ID and have done since day 1 so have Apple decided this cannot happen anymore and each phone must have its own Apple ID ?

Do you have iMessage set to only send to the respective phone numbers or to the Apple ID email address as well?

If it’s set to use the email address as well, I can see scope for confusion.

Lots of people apparently.

Our regular DPD driver said he had more than 80 mobile phones to deliver today. On a normal day he does about 80 to 100 deliveries, so this has basically almost doubled his workload. And there's no reason to expect that it will be any different for all the other thousands of drivers who work for DPD, DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc etc.....

is that new ? It never used to happen

I deleted all of my wife's / son's messages and then it worked fine again but as soon as my wife got on to wifi, it combined her messages and my sons again.

So if i can't fix it, itll have to be whatsapp or revert back to ios11 if i can
 
deleted them again..and they've stayed separate. But my mine and my wife's messages are now combining on my son's phone
 
and before my eyes, its just combined my son and wife's messages

Rolling back to ios 11.4 tonight

I am a happy 6s user and am considering a new one as it is on the way out (lightning socket is temperamental and the silent switch doesn't work), primarily for the telephoto lens in the camera (I tend to "see" photos in short tele) and that's about it. I'm also interested in face ID because I'm helping my family out on the vineyard a bit more now and it shreds my fingers so touch ID doesn't work very often.

But from a "this is one billion times faster" point of view, I'm not bothered.

I might just buy a second hand X...

It’s probably a byproduct of messages in the cloud, I would think all you have to do is go into settings - messages - send and receive and untick the email addresses showing under “you can receive iMessages to and reply from”, also make sure the other phones aren’t activated the Text Message forwarding option.

Using the same AppleID on different people’s devices is going to cause issues more and more as lots of stuff gets moved into the cloud.

I'm sure I saw a setting which said something like 'allow car play when unlocked' it could be something that had crept in in the last iOS 11 update.

There's a setting that says "Allow CarPlay While Locked" which is turned on so I'm not sure why it asks me to unlock it.

Oh. Wonder if one of the apps on CarPlay that has been added is whinging about the phone being locked and that's why?

I'd probably turn that setting off. Turn phone off and on again then turn it back on. I usually end up doing that with an otherwise intractable silliness.

Thanks Dave but it doesn't work. We signed out of everything, just left the phone numbers and still the messages were received by the wrong people...

Maybe we need different IDs but that means more money for Apple Music. Gah

Yep, we sold lots of them, and thankfully supply is much better than it was for the X.
 
I'm a bit of a technology dunce and would appreciate your help.

I have an IPhone 7 running a previous version (not sure how to find out what version it is) of IOS i.e. not IOS 12.

Last night I had a text from a relative. As I had the phone in my hand, I was able to glance at the screen as soon as the phone sounded 'ding' .

I could see a notification of the text message (the first few words of the message in a small window at the top of the screen) and an accompanying photo. The notification disappeared after a few seconds.

I then opened the text message app and read the message - but there was no photo. Thinking it may have gone into my 'photos' folder I looked there; but again that photo wasn't there either.

Where could it be? Surely if you get a photo in a text notification it should be there along with the text message.

That's good. It's been working for ages on my android but not on my wife's iPhone. Annoying when I just put a new head unit in the mx-5 that has both android and carplay

Just updated my brand new XS, which kept freezing when I went into settings (seemed to be bluetooth related), hopefully this will sort it.

Other than that I'm loving the upgrade from my old 6S, Face ID is fab and makes so many of the features work in a better, more natural way (notifications, for example). The camera is very good too.
