I've got a Christening in a week or so and I'm intending on hiring a fast lens as an all-rounder. My 50 1.8 is the fastest I've got at the mo.

I'm pretty much set on hiring a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L II (on a 5D2).

Does anyone use one for Weddings/Christenings or similar and do you find it wide enough for group shots?

I'm aware that it's not the longest and I had thought about getting a 70-200 2.8 to compliment it as my f4 probably won't cut the mustard indoors. Obviously I'd rather not incur the cost of hiring 2 lenses but if needs must...

Any experience/advice re the 24-70 would be great.

Cheers,

Danny.

i think you will be surprised that you CAN do it with a 50mm

move around and use it open

:) you're absolutely right. I used the nifty fifty for a lot of the time but did give in and rent a 24-70 2.8 and was glad I did for the wider shots in church. It's one helluva lens.

If your hiring a lens I see no reason not to go for the 24-70 2.8II , it will help with both the more distant and wide shots, however the 50mm will still be better if the lights bad so use two bodies if you have them with the 24-70 flashed and 50 without. I did a few christenings with the 24-70 mk1 but the mk2 is supposed to be much better , i now use a 35 f2 IS and 85 1.8 so have the range covered with two bodies. The 24-70 is definitely wide enough for group shots i would tend to stick to around the 30mm range and keep people away from the edges of the shot if its anything like the old one as there will be distortion and vignetting to contend with.

Good Luck !

Thanks Andrew. I ended up doing exactly that - used the 24-70 and a flash for the posed church shots. It's definitely going to be my next purchase!
